We recently installed butcher block in our pantry for a counter top. We like the pattern and raw/natural wood colors, but want to seal it (not that we will ever use it for food prep) to protect it from the elements. Everything we have tried on scrap pieces has resulted in dramatic color changes.

So far we have tried a couple different butcher block mineral oil conditioners. What should I try next?

Epoxy will seal it and protect it but it will change the color and make it look “wet”. Pretty much anything you put on it will amplify the colors and change. You’d have to leave it rough sanded for the natural more matte look.

Try a water-based poly if you are only using it for pantry storage.

Looks good. I need some for a counter top in our laundry room… it’s on the list of things to do.

I put boiled linseed oil on a new flatbed trailer. It looked wet for a day or so, but dried well and didn't change the color very much, if any.

That’s a beauty, how was it compared to typical countertop cost?

The water based poly works pretty good. That’s what I used on my Ash woodworking bench, and it has held up very well. Doesn’t change the wood color.

This was a 4 foot and 6 foot piece. $600. I wanted to match the granite we have in our kitchen but it was $6500 for a slab and then $1200 to cut and install and we would have a ton of it leftover. So I’d say it was a bargain for the butcher block.

If you've already applied mineral oil to the surface you may be SOL for any poly products to adhere to the surface.
