The oldest granddaughter, to be married in early Feb, has requested that I make a cross for the ceremony. I was thinking a small cross would be suitable, but she wants one 3’ tall. No problem, other than I never had the need to make one of any size prior to this. So today I made a 50% scale model, out of Walnut. Simple, but attractive. I’ll put a finish on it tomorrow. I fear that other family members will also want one - small one, not big one. I may have to make enough to saturate the family market - all for free, as usual. The good news is that I have an easy interesting project. I hate being bored.

This’ll be a pretty good sized wedding. Originally it was to be small, but you know how that goes. The granddaughter is super stressed, and wishes she had eloped. We warned her that it could easily get out of control, like her stepsister’s wedding of 13 bridesmaids. Great after-party though, and I expect the same after this one. If only I could drink wildly…

That turned out great. Your granddaughter will cherish the cross.

I wonder what she’ll do with the 36” tall cross. This one was just a test run, to be sure of dimensions. She may not want this littler one, but her Mom might.

'Looks beautiful 603. Be glad she wants God mentioned and at the center of her wedding. That's more important than anything else. We attended a wedding in the Driscoll Hotel several years ago. Methodist lady minister, wearing her full vestments, didn't mention God one single time. I'm sure it was at the request of the bride, not wanting to offend anyone. I had my closest friend make a cross for us out of the old, rough water tank cypress that my dad had saved from a previous place. It hangs inside at the ranch, over the back door. It means a lot to me.

Thanks Creekrunner. I just finished sanding, finishing and wet sanding. And the base is also done. I’ll post the final result tomorrow, after waxing with 0000 steel wool.
I don’t get the big pieces for the big cross till maybe Thursday, from Dakota Hardwoods in Waco. After making the small cross to scale, I feel comfortable with doing a big one.
If my Grandpa was still alive, I know he’d love a cross like the small one. After WW1, he went to church a lot.

The final product. I’ll start the big one, 36” tall instead of this 18” one, later this week, once I have the wood.
