Serious question for a Wildlife Biologist.

Something I’ve never thought about. When the rut starts, does a hot doe go looking for a buck or do the bucks figure out that those gals need a “ partner”? I recall that my whiteface and brangus heifers got awfully anxious.

I recall my single days, between wives, when the females, needed help with their “problem”.

But, is the Fall season a mutual issue for wildlife so the young can be born in the nice Spring weather? Bluntly, does her Fall estrus trigger his interest?

Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

I’m not a biologist but I stayed in a Motel 6 before.
The good Lord wants those babies to be born in a particular window of time every year and hopefully pretty close together. So all does will be receptive at about the same time and only for awhile. If they don’t get bred they will be receptive again in about a month, and so on.
The bucks are ready, willing, able and looking at all times when they are in hard antler. It’s up to the doe to time it.
As far which goes looking for love, I guess they both do. Certainly the buck it’s nonstop. I think the doe will “advertise” when she is ready but even if she didn’t the bucks normally find her.
Exceptions to some of this revolve around very skewed sex ratios, which wont normally happen without man’s intervention.

What is somewhat controversial is that many believe(me) that the vast majority of does come in heat at about the same time every year. Some see signs of the rut or don’t see signs of the rut at various times but the breeding is happening rather you see it or not, iMO.
