I am in the process of having a Rem Model 700 re-barreled from 7mm Mag to 300 H&H Mag. The 7mm now has a Leupold 3x9 that I am going to put on a 308 Win. This means I need to get a scope for the 300. Haven't bought a scope in years due to not having the need to. I always liked a Leupold but am hearing that the quality has slipped. Mind you, I have just heard that, not sure if that is true. But for those that have been in the scope buying mode in the last few years I am looking for input. The 300 H&H will be used mostly for elk and mule deer and possibly nilgai. If you were looking for a scope what would be the one you would look at with a top price of $1000. Any helpful input is appreciated

At $1k. ceiling, the Burris XTR 3 3.3-18 would be my pick, it is a FFP so there is that. There is a Maven or two that may work in your price range as well.

Take a serious look at the GPO scope line. I absolutely love mine. GPO was started by the former CEO of Zeiss.

Join Guidefitter veteran program discount -Maven s1.2 3-15x44 Mil SHL but probably more scope then you are looking for, so join expert voice vet program and get the NF SHV 3-10x44. It’s nothing fancy glass wise but it’s tough, repeatable and affordable(relative)

Trijicon is also on Guidefitter and gives vet discounts can’t go wrong with any trijicon

I've always been a Leupold fan & their customer support & warranties have been fantastic. Of course that implies that I've had to use their customer support.

Lately I've become a big fan of Meopta. In a side by side comparison of similar priced scopes the Meopta glass is very impressive. I've never needed customer service so I can't comment on that aspect. The only negative I've ever read about Meopta is that their scopes are slightly heavier. If you get a chance, I suggest you take a look through one.

I think once you get down tow SHV there are better options in that price range.

I like the trijicon suggestion above. I think we get side tracked thinking everyone wants to dial. A good 2-10 goes a long ways for most people’s hunting needs.

This would be an excellent choice and they have a no fuss reticle if you don’t want that one.

That Steiner Predator 4 2.5-10x42 - E3 is a great scope, especially at only $699.99

Meopta is definitely worth a look. Nice scopes!

Another one that might interest you is the Tract Toric 2-10x.You get A LOT of scope for your money buying from these guys. No middleman, and customer service is very responsive (I've had no trouble with my scope itself, I just had problems completing the purchase on-line...one of the owners hopped on it and made it happen for me, and that was on New Years Eve). Tract offers a veteran/first responder discount, too.

I want a tract because of what they’re doing. I just haven’t found the application for what I need.

My only gripe with these hunting holdover reticles is they arbitrarily show you holding points for holds out to 500 yards that will never be accurate. The only hunting BDC reticles worth having are a standard MOA or MIL “ruler”.

I can see the application for combat weapons where it’s calibrated to an exact load and your goal is to just hit your enemy to incapacitate them.

Accept them as an estimated yardage, shoot it and find out. Before I started dialing I used them effectively. My ranges for the hash marks were +\~ what was given.

Yelp, and they can also get you in a bind when density altitude changes dramatically from sight in. Air is a lot thicker when temperature drops 40 plus degrees and humidity goes up 60+% from sight in/verification, that’s not even taken in account SFP power calibration.

But for average guy that hunts under 300 and doesn’t travel around the country they do work

Yup.

I was excited about that Steiner, until I saw the reticle. No thanks.

Lot of good suggestions on here.

The Vortex Razor LHT 3-15x50 is another to add to the list for you. You can sometimes find it around $1,000, like here LINK HERE.

I have this scope on my 7mm-08 and love it. Light weight, clear glass, awesome reticle, and locking turrets. I took a deer at 280 yard with this scope this year, just dialed the mils and anchored the deer. Can also hunt think woods with it at the 3x magnification no problem. For a hunting rifle, this is one of my favorites.

Supposed to be a new 3-12 x42 hunting scope coming out from I think minox that’s supposed to be as bombproof as NF and Trijicon and only 20oz FFP

I'm going to have to get my hands on one.

Sure wished they went to 15X with it.

3-15X can do just about anything. 10 yards to 1000 yards.
