I had them build a 6.5 Weatherby for me. The rifles are first class quality, best components. Mine shot well, but not as good as I thought it should. This was with the reloaded ammo they made for the rifle. I guess the worst part was the arrogance of Alan Roving. If you dare question anything about the rifle, he got kinda defensive. Tim McWhorter, Alans Dad in law started the company and had to split off and start his own rifle building co, Flat Creek Precision. . 600 yards

Buzz - that’s interesting, he has a competing company with his son in the same state. Did they have a falling out ?

Buzz - that’s interesting, he has a competing company with his son in the same state. Did they have a falling out ? I watched a video where Alan was talking about his rifles and the Berger bullets. After about 45 seconds I determined “ yeah, fck that guy, I’ll buy from somebody else” IMO for what you get, it’s a little pricey. You can get the same quality rifle for a few thousand less from other builders.

I don't know squat about the company/family matters and don't really care. My 7mm08 is supremely accurate, well made, and never had a days worth of trouble out of it. I've had it about 12 years or so.

You can get the same quality rifle for a few thousand less from other builders. Everyone starting with equivalent quality parts, it comes down to proper steps at the lathe, proper steps in the stock work, proper loading components selected, and proper steps taking working up the load. Some Craftsmen are created equal, some are not. Some know what they should do, and they may start cutting corners later. Great work performed on the rifle and ammo is going to show up down range. Corners cut on the rifle and/or ammo is going to show up down range.

Think they did have a falling out. Agree with txtrophy85.
I would contact Robert with Alamo Precision in Hurst. They build a superb rifle with GREAT customer service. Bobert and his staff will spend personal time with you discussing what YOU want in your set-up.

I have had a couple of McWhorters in my hands, they shot well, were built as good as the next guys, and cycled as they should. They are nothing special, Alamo was mentioned above, same story, I would never hesitate to own either. Many others can replicate the quality of these builds, some will cost more, some less.

Never shot or handled a bad mcwhorter, but you are paying a premium for his reputation though. With that said, it’s a well deserved reputation built of many years of excellent customer feedback
I personally would go with a micro builder or horizon. Most builders can’t compete with Horizon since he is second only to MOA rifles in vertical and horizontal integration of components.
If I only had one option I’d go with micro builder

I’ve never had a custom rifle or really what I would call a top tier off the shelf rifle. My plan is to take this pic and specs to Alamo and see what they come up with. I’ll stick with 6.5cm also. McWhorter charges $6500 for that one. I like them heavy, 10# + scope . Suppressor , not a brake

Buzz, did yours meet the 1/2 MOA guarantee and, if not, what did they do?

Owned several McWhorter’s. They were all tack drivers. It’s a turn key rifle with all the load development done for you. You can definitely get a cheaper rifle that shoots just as good if you are willing to do the leg work and load development yourself!

You might also look in to West Texas Ordnance. Clayton Smith owner of WTO built my 6.5/284. Super happy with this rig. Plenty of great rifle builders here in Texas.

Buzz, did yours meet the 1/2 MOA guarantee and, if not, what did they do? Yes, that's about a 3" group at 600 yards at Jasons Ranch back in the day. If I bought another McWhorter I would buy a more mainstream caliber, not a 6.5 Weatherby Magnum. But @ $6,000 for rifle only

These days I’d buy a stock good one and then spend my money on glass and bullets… I answered what wasnt asked but I ain’t wrong… That’s pretty much where I’m at having gone both routes multiple times. Just research which stock rifles are the most reliable, assuming they make something in the round that you want.
