Hello,

Using my Stoeger m3k on a dove hunt today and noticed that while I was aiming if I focus my eyes on the red sight I would see two doves. If I focused on the doves I would have two red sights. Does anyone have any experience with this and tips on how to aim shotty for doves and waterfowl? I was two eyes open. Open to one eye closed but was doing some googling and apparently that’s less than ideal

Thanks!

What side do you shoot and what eye are you dominate?

My father unfortunately came to that conclusion late in life recently. It can be done if you close that left eye but your still off a little. He killed many a dove and ducks but you have to figure that out. Good luck Sir

I shoot left and right handed equally. I just squint the off eye a little and the other one takes over as needed. You might try that. I still see out of the off eye it’s just not enough to take over the process.

You point a shotgun and shoot with both eyes open.
Go to the trap range and it may take you a couple hundred targets but you'll get the 2 eye shooting thing down.
I did it years ago and shoot much better.

You may be able to retrain you brain. The time honored technique is to wear a pair of wear when you shoot. On the left lens you can place some opaque scotch tape (best option - mess) or use some chap stick to smear up the lens. The goal is to obscure the image through the left lens, and not completely block out the image (no eye patch). When the image through your dominant left eye isn't clear then your brain starts focusing on clear image that is coming through your the right eye.

A friend discovered his eye dominance issue when he enlisted in the Marines. This was 25 years ago and at that time their technique was to slap or punch him in his left eye until it was swollen enough that he was forced to use his right eye. I strongly suggest going with the obscured lens on some safety glasses smirk

Yup, tired eyes. Practice focus near and far to get the muscles going again. Everybody has that problem, just practice.

Short term, use the scotch tape, closing one or using an eye patch hinders depth perception some. Long term,
Learn to shoot left handed.

I have the same issue. Kinda figured out how to deal with it shooting traditional archery. I focus on the target, and use the sight plane that is down the top of the arrow/ shotgun barrel and not down the side. It’s hard to explain, but I figure you know what I’m talking about OP. Probably not the most efficient, but once I figured out what I was looking at, things got a lot better.

And before anyone says to shoot left handed: I am EXTREMELY right handed. My left is an uncoordinated chunk of meat. My eyeballs just don’t align with it.

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

^^^^^

This.

My Little Brother shoots right handed but is slightly left eye dominate.

So his eyes 'compete' for dominance when shooting a shotgun (both eyes open). We discovered this many years ago when he was at my place skeet shooting with the rest of us. He was very inconsistent (unusual for him).

I asked him to do the eye test. Had him slightly squint the off side eye and BAM.....his shooting immediately improved.
