Which ever is lightest to carry.

Better yet don’t go to a Texas forum, go to a forum with real Canadian hunters like Rokslide.

That’s big bear country.

If it were me, I would bring a .300 and your .45-70. But that’s just me

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Definitely a 30 cal…recoil is really about weight. A super light 30 cal will kick much harder than the same rifle 5 lbs heavier.

Store bought 300wm and 30-06
Reloading 300 Prc

If you can get 300 Prc ammo in store I would go there instead

Absolutely not!
Had a recruiter call me had a few interviews and the offer is really attractive moving into some more interviews after the beginning of the year..

This might be an opportunity where my wife can be a stay at home mom, and we can still live comfortably.

That’ll be nice. My one trip to Canada was for work and in Toronto. Not my cup of tea.

The kookifornia invasion of DFW is turning out to not be my cup of tea anymore…
I’m gonna make a few trips before I make a decision but I kinda like the mountains and the idea of being in the mountains with a 17 min drive to work has some appeal to me.

Hunted here all my life and out of that list either the 308 or 300 WM with the 300 WM being first as it will let you reach and touch stuff further. Biggest thing you will encounter in Alberta is a moose. Lots of moose killed every year with the 30/30 so either of those is fine for that. Kill/vitals zone on moose is about the size of an oven door so don't even really need to be super accurate. Bear wise there are grizzlies in AB but they are not the monsters you get on the coast and most are less than 600 lbs. Black bears as well and they are smaller again with most under 400 lbs and probably average around 200 lbs. Contrary to what a lot of people think bears are not hard to kill.

Being comfortable on one income was always my goal. We never did the comfortable part, but we made do and my kids and grand kids are better for it. Good on you, sir!

The 200 rounds has me in a box, it’s not clear if it’s 200 per gun or just 200 all in.
I was going to file for the PAL.

Pretty sure it's 200 all in. Ammo wise the 308 will be most available followed by the 300 WM.

Alberta with the critters available there, moose. elk, whitetail and mule deer, black and grizzly bears around in good numbers sheep and mountain goats so lots of big game potential. 300WM would be a good choice for sure in a place like that easily being enough for everything on that list.

18 most searched cartridges, it is 9th.

20 what are rifles chambered in, it is 9th.

10 of the most popular cartridges custom rifles are chambered in. 30-06 is not on the list.

12 cartridges ranked by ammo sales, it is 7th.

There is an age group still propping it up. Up and comers don't seem to care about it. When I was buying chamber reamers and gauges, I did not buy .30-06.

Your facts are understandable and your opinion I agree with. I like my 3006 but I know it’s likely slowing down with younger folks.

None of that data crap has anything to do with the fact that the venerable 30-06 is a proven game killing machine. Always was, always will be no matter what the young, flat brimmed crowd says.

There's a reason that cartridges are frequently compared to the ol' .30-06, and that reason is, it works.

I understand the emotional "blah" response to the cartridge when it is suggested. I think that stems from its ubiquitous nature. I always felt the same way about it and never wanted one at all, but I read an article once...I think it was published about 20 years ago. The article was a bit of a spoof or something of that nature, and it described this new cartridge and cited its capabilities which were impressive. It was revealed to be the ".300 Whelen." That little trick opened my eyes to my own prejudice against the .30-06 and at that time I realized I might actually like to own one. Not too long after that I swapped into a later vintage Model 70 in .30-06 and I've been very happy with it. It is very accurate, it's powerful enough for anything in North America yet without excessive recoil (just use the right bullet!), and it has become "my lucky rifle" meaning that when I carry it I see stuff to shoot.

Before the internet, we used to read magazines that were published with articles reviewed and edited to filter out BS by experienced editors. Nowadays any yokel can and often does self publish on the internet and this has propagated tons and tons of BS.
