So what say the hive? I been doing some reading and it seems like many calibers are in short supply and very costly in Canada.. what would you take and would you use it on any game animal?

This. I shoot a braked rifle and its a creampuff. the .300 win is a magical cartridge, it hits with authority without punishing recoil. I love mine.

A quick bit of googling says the most popular rifle cartridge in Canada is a 30-06, so I would go with a 30-06.
I googled it, because I, like probably everybody else commenting on this thread, I have not been to Canada much less hundred there LOL

I’ve been to Canada and will never be back unless work insists.
300 Winchester Magnum. It’s all the authority you need. I predict it will be here when the PRC splashes down to hang out with the Ultra Mags, Ruger Mags, etc.

It is my impression that Canadian customs dislike Americans with guns and particularly Texans with guns.
In addition to your caliber question, you might also inquire about the best way to enter the country with a gun.

Did you take any shots that the 3006 wouldn't have made? It's always great to hear experiences from people who have actually been there

I may go there for a few years, so I was thinking what I will take. Was considering 2 rifles and a shotgun. I have no issues filing all of the permits and licenses. Already have most of that together. I will have a work visa and all. Was considering doing dual cizitenship.

I've had clients take their .300 Win Mag loaded with 200 gr ELD-X to Canada, and we're successful with elk and moose. The same goes for the 300 PRC loaded with a 212 gr ELD-X in Canada and Alaska.

Agree You also have to think about ammo an availability and you can always find 300 am in Canada. New specialty stuff like PRC may not be as available.

All the .30-06’s I’ve shot have kicked pretty good. So I figure let’s have the same recoil and better performance. Canada is a big country, and it’s not just full of moose and bears…they have 3 species of sheep, 3 types of caribou, mule deer, whitetail deer..it’s diverse. A .300 win mag covers all the bases with ease.

And that's from personal experience, I've always felt a 30-06 is a pretty soft recoiling gun and a 300 Magnum tends to be unpleasant. I did just Google that as well though because I was curious and 3006 have about a third less recoil according to math then 300 magnums. But I also figure the 30 ought 6 would cover all of the bases you listed with ease as well. Most people aren't going to shoot past 3 or 400 yards and in that distance I don't really feel like there's enough difference to make a difference.

If the .30-06 is loaded with H-4350 type powder, it is a sharp recoil.
Load the .300 Win Mag with H-1000, it is more of a slow shove of recoil.
I've shot thousands of rounds of .300 Win Mag. And hundreds of rounds of .30-06. Give me the .300 Win Mag every time.

My experience with both as well.

If I am planning the hunt of a lifetime in Canada, I am not taking grandad’s 30-06. It’s a great cartridge, but why settle? Take all the gun you can handle, that you think you can find ammo.
The win mag is faster, flatter, and more powerful than the 30-06. This is not refutable. Probably harder to get ammo for the .338 in a pinch. 300 winmag on the walmart shelf.
I’d go with the 300 win mag.

Based on my two hunts there take a rifle with a detachable mag, according to their laws no loaded firearms are allowed in/on ANY motorized vehicles including boats so you will be frequently loading and unloading. I took a Marlin .45-70 Guide gun and this was a major pain in the arse!!!

You can take ammo, I am unclear on quantity.. there seems to be this 200 round number, and if I take 2 rifles and shotgun, a flat of shells is more than the 200 specified on the import form. So I am not clear on that part the reference is not worded for a dumb redneck like myself to process! I was more worried about replacing what I use down the road.
