3 bucks in two months, and I am officially tagged out. Started off with an archery buck in October and followed that with two rifle bucks in November with the last one being a bruiser and my personal best. Very thankful!
Congratulations. You want to share any scores, weights, ages or stories?
1st Buck was killed during bow season. I had him on camera starting in September. By late September he had already broken off his right brow which was about 6". Very clear from his face and body that this guy was a fighter. I sat up a brand new tripod on a spot I had mainly set up for pigs (no pen around feeder) up on a hill overlooking the feeder and sat it the next morning. He came in cruising for does and never went to the feeder and headed off in the opposite direction. I thought he was probably not coming back. Next thing I know, he is coming straight at me on the one side I have no cover around the tripod and sidehilled his way to me still cruising for does. He eventually made it to 19 yards and turned broadside and I put it through both lungs. It was a cool scene with not shooting him at the feeder and watching him come straight at me. All that happened pretty quick and I never got glass on him. Apparently the night before (I had pictures of him the day before) he had broken off a decent part of his main beam on his right side. Like I said, Fighter. He is probably missing 10" in total. Scored at 120" broken, but I was plenty happy with taking the mature dominant buck of the area. I had him at 5.5 yo.
2nd Buck was killed at the same feeder (Coke Co. - 2 Buck County). I had my brother and his buddies set up at what I thought were the better spots for opening day of rifle. Since I had already shot a buck, I went back to this feeder with a rifle just to see if I could shoot a pig or two. Real windy afternoon and didn't see much until right around the time the sun was going down. A doe stepped out and then spooked pretty quick. I thought, well here comes the pigs. Then that guy steps out, runs the doe off, and came back to the feeder. I knew he was a good shooter for our area immediately and put a good shot on him. I had not seen that buck before that day. My brother and his friends ended up getting skunked. Scored upper 120s - didn't quite make 130. I also had this buck at 5.5 yo.
3rd Buck on my other lease had been one we had seen around since '22 at 3-4 yo. Has very distinctive two white stripes on his back - we called him white patch. Last year had an injury of some sort and hardly grew a left side, so he was on the no kill list because of that. This year he blew up. One of the better bucks on the entire lease and everyone had him on their hit list. I had been getting my a** kicked bowhunting all year here and decided to go make a rifle sit at a stand I knew he had been a couple times. Had a doe and a fawn at the feeder for about an hour and started glassing around. Was looking at a huge bird in a tree about 400 yards off for a while after being tired of looking at the doe and fawn for so long trying to figure out what kind of bird it was. I take a glance down with binoculars and he is standing right there in front of the pen. Snuck up on me. He jumped in the pen, and I was going to wait for him to get back out so I didn't have to shoot through the pen. He got out of the pen rather quickly and started going after the doe, and I knew he would probably be gone for the evening if I let him do that so he quartered away from me and I quickly put one right through his heart. He went 140.5" and easily my best buck to date to top off what was already a great season. I would say he is 5-6 yo. I didn't get his jaw bc he went straight to the taxidermist.
I hope I wasn't too long winded. I feel very blessed as I have gone many a years without ever pulling the trigger or releasing an arrow and to get three this year after all the work I put in over the summer moving and putting up new sets felt very rewarding.
Really appreciate the long windedness and most of us do or they dont have to read-its a no lose to spell it out. If you really want to get the jaw just tell the taxi to save it. Most of them are used to it to the point of expecting it.
At some point in life its time to quit chasing the pot of gold and just enjoy the rainbow. FR Keep your gratitude higher than your expectations. RWH
