Over Waller, Tx, or thereabouts. Lift was pretty slow at about 2 knots when I could find it. I'm heading over to that cloud on the left.

Cool. Long time ago I worked with several glider pilots, one was related to Johnson. Worked with Gibbons to make a diff barometer for the wings. Often offered a ride but passed.

Fun until you get sucked up into a storm cloud.

Did you get towed up? I flew a few times many years ago. It was just too hot for me to enjoy it. Up here in northTexas, you just couldn't get any lift unless it was hot and you could catch a thermal off a highway or some other pavement. It's pretty flat so not as much updraft as you might get somewhere with some help from the ground. It was fun, I would just like to do it when it was 70 degrees instead of 100.

Lift down here, just West of montgomery county, is typically moderate (~300 to 400 FPM). But it all depends on the day and how well one can center a thermal. We have a few of the competition/task guys that can go 100+ kilometers on a day I wouldnt think of going further that glide distance back home. These guys are really good. Last month I was flying down in Marfa and got up to 12.6K. Temps up there were near freezing as you well know.

Jetdad, having read a few of your other posts, and with all respect due, your roundout is my thermalling altitude! clap

Amen to that. It pays to understand ameteur meterology and watch for overdevelopment. That, and a darn good pair of airbrakes.

Im gonna go again later today Billy. But the forecast is terrible weather (for gliders) - Clear, sunshine, light winds, and no turbulance. It'll be a race to see who lands first - me or the towplane. But, it needs to be flown, this sailplane is SLICK in the air and requires practice and recency.
