I have a Ruger SFAR that I want to start reloading for. Any favorite/pet loads suggestions to share? Thanks.

A 150 or 165 SGK and IMR4064 has worked very well in my DPMS. I don’t recall what the exact charge was.

168 AMax, 150 SP, 160 FTX all worked well in my DPMS, 16" or 22" 1:10 barrel. 4895, LeverE, 8208xbr, ARComp were best powders for me. Varget worked OK but crunchy to drop. Hornady doesn't show (LE) it for 308W but does for 308mx. I tried 4166 but didn't like it. Most any 335 to 4166 rate available powders will work OK.

120 TAC-TX over 50 grains of Ramshot TAC should get 3000+ fps muzzle and a bullet that will expand down to 1400 fps since it was designed for the Blackout.

Used the load this year in my Ruger Scout.

4064 powder is the easy button for great .308W loads.
Loads at just about any level with a good bullet have shot great in my bolt action. I think it would would be really hard to go wrong as long as you use good components.

I've used 155 gr, 165 gr, 168 gr, and 178 gr in 1:10 twist .308 Win. All with great success.

When the barrel is 20" or greater, H-Varget is the powder to use.

When the barrel is less than 20", a faster burn rate powder is beneficial.

When it is a gas gun, instead of a bolt gun, a faster burn rate powder is beneficial.

1:10” in a .308 will work with 110’s to 190’s from trying them.

For hunting, my go to load is a Barnes TTSX 130 with 45.5 of Varget

For target shooting, the 175 Sierra Match King with 43.5 of Varget.

Obviously, every rifle and combination of components is its own unique mix, so start low and work up always watching for early indications of excessive pressure.

Curious have you shot anything with these? I loaded some of the 110’s in a reduced 30-06 @ 2415 fps avg. I recovered 2 out of my sand backstop. One shed 2 petals and the other split into a doughnut shaped piece and the base broke out of the middle. Hitting deer will probably be less destructive on them but I was surprised how much they broke up.

For 308, my go to is generally H4831 and 150 to 165 gr lead

Thanks, everyone! These suggestions give me a lot of combinations to try and I'll start working on them today to find out which ones my particular rifle prefers.

I shot a mature buck opening weekend with that load. It was slightly quartering to me. Bullet landed towards the back of shoulder and exited the ribs. The exit was probably an inch but it took some bone out with it. The deer went down within 15 yards. When I gutted him, bullet missed the heart but took out both lungs. Shot was about 100 yards. I’m not sure if the petals came off. Sample of one but worked great.

I couldn’t have asked for it to do anything more. I will be using them again.

I use 168 gr Hornady AMAX over 41.4 gr of IMR 4895, Starline LRP brass, CCI 34 primers, OAL 2.8" in my SFAR 16" barrel. Average velocity is 2468 fps, groups average 1.5" at 100 yds. This 75 lb pig was shot a couple weeks ago at 85 yds. The bullet exited the shoulder on the off side of impact, it ran 15 yds. The pic is of the exit side. Most pigs shot with this load are DRT, otherwise, this was typical performance.

I got into reloading just a few years ago and started with 308. Went a little balls to the walls and loved it. I'm a self declared 308 fan boy.

Many good suggestions above. The versatility of 308 in regards to powder and bullets is the best trait of this caliber.

My only suggestion here not said already us Starline brass. I got Laupua, alpha, norma and some others. I can't
hardly see the difference from Starline. If u order direct from them then it's cheaper than reconditioned military bras. BTW, their 260 is great brass roo.

The first rule of Starline is we don't talk about Starline.

Oh, yes we do.

Not a damn thing wrong with Starline brass for general hunting use. You may want Alpha, Lapua, or something else for competition but otherwise Starline is very good brass.

Starline works fine in my Grendel. Regarding 308, we only have one rifle in that caliber. The oldest grandson shoots 150 gr SSTs in it, with Nosler brass, and has never lost a deer or pig so far. It’s loaded over a medium dose of IMR 3031.

I like Starline. I use it for 308, 6.8 spc and 338 Federal. Pretty much the only one that makes 338Fed head stamped brass.

I gotcha instantly. It is kind of an open secret. I have both the standard and small primer versions. I use the small rile match version for my hunting ammo with a 150gr bullet and love it.
