I'm sure there is a thread on here, but I haven't been on here in around 10 years so please forgive me. Can anybody tell me general information about the deer population in and around langtry. We are thinking about buying a place out there, but wanted to see if others have been out that far. Most of my experience has been hill country, south texas and northeast Texas. We have a large family 5 kids and now 2 grand kids, so we would rather buy a piece of property to hunt than to continue to pay lease fees every year. The land out there is within my budget unlike places here in south east texas. Just some help to point me in a right direction.

Several fairly large properties between Del Rio and Comstock. Not sure what is for sale in Langtry. Deer are pretty average here. Pretty good numbers in most areas. Sheep ranchers keep the predator population down to very little if any. Any given morning you can probably find several hit by vehicles on Hwy 90 between Comstock and Del Rio.

It depends on how large a place you buy. Depends on what those that own property next to you do hunting and take. Depends on how many of your family hunt and what they shoot. Out there is not like South Texas or the hill country as for the number of deer.

There are 8 of us, and the property is a few hundred acres. We have managed deer on low fence in east texas of the same size before and went from few deer to always seeing deer and shooting 140+ bucks. I know how the neighbor thing goes. With all that said we just want a family place so kids and grand kids can see deer and shoot some too. I just don't want like how I grew up in East Texas where ypu may only see 1 deer a season (80s and 90s). Thank ypu for the insight. We got kids from 26-10 and now grandkids, so we just want the tradition to continue. I have a place in Kansas if I want a booner. Lol.

Thank you. Just want kids and grand kids to see deer and enjoy hunting. Jist don't want to get in an area where you see 1 deer a season like how it was when I was growing up in East Texas. Looking at a few hundred acres out there for 8 of us. Whats your thoughts? I definately don't want one of those 50 or 100 acre tracks, but 1k+ is out of the budget.

Few hundred acres is not enough for the amount of family hunting in this terrain. Likely to have illegal border crossers stealing your stuff as well. A mature buck is gonna be mid 120-130s.

I agree with Pitchfork. The further west you go, the more sense it makes to lease a large tract, unless you are quite well off and can buy a few (or several) thousand acres.

Whats the deer density like out that far? Most won't hunt more than 2 weekends a season. Besides me and my wife and our oldest son most problem won't even go hunt. In all honesty its more like 4 hunters. Im at that point now where I do more watching than shooting.

Langtry is in Val Verde county and as long as I remember has been a 5 deer county with 2 bucks. I kept a feeder going as much as possible and always had deer show up every morning and evening. Not many people are running livestock anymore. Careful driving at night. Killed more deer with my Ford than my Remington. Deer are smaller in that area due to poor browsing , dry conditions. But there is no shortage. You will do fine .

Thanks. I kinda figured if I kept food and water around the deer would be around. I was just kind of getting an idea if it was worth it, because if I want to go shoot a wall hanger I can go to my friends place in Kansas. I just want there to be deer.

There are deer pretty well everywhere. There are also neighbors. Some are good and others aren’t. I know a guy who bought a hunting place. Then a neighbor started a trailer park.He now has poacher problems
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Deer in Val Verde County this year aren't roaming too far. Here, outside of Comstock, I hand feed my front yard, little bit of lawn and a bunch of brush and get 3 or 4 does a night/evening come in and scarf it all up. Their range is probably no more than about 100 acres.

If it's one of those so called ranchettes if the deer aren't already gone they will be. Buddy bought 750 acres and with today's custom builds, glass, and handloads neighbors are shooting deer across 2 of those places. You can't be there but a limited time and with good glass if they see no one on property they hunt it. Impossible to monitor.
