Unfortunately, all of mine died as well after they were pulled for leveling. Although, I did not do much to help them while they were uprooted. I gave it a valiant effort after the fact but to no avail. I used the timing to upgrade all of my flower beds around the house.

my mother had several that were dug up around a foundation. She fill up several old wash tubs with garden soil and transferred the shrubs into those tubs. They lived for several years in those tubs before she started giving them away. I got one and left it in the tub for likely 2 years before I finally got around to planting it in the ground and it lived up until that hard freeze in 2020.

Some of it depends on what type of shrubs they are, some are easier to transplant than others. Since the roots were disturbed and damaged during removal, you will need to prune the top of the plant back to basically equalize. That will help minimize how much the roots are trying to maintain the plant with water and food with less roots available. I would cut the plant back to 1/3 of its current state. You probably lost more hair roots than you realize, the hair roots are the main feeders. The plant will grow back and actually be much fuller than the current state it was before being dug up.
For replant, i would use a compost soil with some bark in it to help retain moisture. Mix that 50% with the soil you have in the area when replanting. I would stay away from any fertilizer, the organic mix in the compost should be enough until Spring. Add 1" of mulch on top when done, that should help maintain a consistent root temp and moisture to allow the roots to grow. Hopefully you wont have any early, heavy freezes that will set the plant back further or kill it. You will not see a regrowth of leaves until next Spring, that is normal.
Good luck!

yep -prune them back at least 50% to give them a fighting chance - water often with some diluted miracle grow....
