A friend handed me some brass and the dies. He said "I need some ammo".
The brass got decapped, stainless tumbled, dried, annealed, sized, trimmed, primer pockets deburred.
He doesn't want a full load development. And I don't have the rifle.
Some searching showed me 100 gr bullets seem to be common, in loaded ammo. I will see if I can find some Sierra Game Kings.
Hodgdon lists H-Varget as an option.
I was hoping for some insight from those that have loaded for this cartridge before. If he'd pay for a load development, I could figure it out. I'm rolling the dice on the proper powder charge. .5 gr under maximum and hope for the best?

I'm surprised that you are doing it without at least minimal load development. Granted, you are 10000x more experienced at loading than I am, but, I'm still surprised.

Is this for a 99 Savage or a bolt gun? The 99 Savage has a 14 twist and the Remington bolt gun will have 10 twist. Factory ammo used to be 87gr bullets, but the 100gr will work. H4895 is a good powder for that, I ran the Varget through QuickLoad and it is very low on the recommended powders but if that is what you got then use it.

Then I said OK, that tells me what bullet weight to buy. Then he said, the load might be written down inside the box of dies. A load his dad came up with many decades ago. Then I went and opened the box of dies. I don't have that powder. But it is a very close burn rate to H-4350, which I do have.

My M70 carbine refuses to group anything much above 85-87 grains; JP4065 (and your client's Dad!) likely have the right of it. The ".250-3000" marketing morons of the day sure handicapped a great round by insisting on that velocity to boost sales. A faster twist and consistent performance with heavier bullets might have made this a favorite instead of an "also ran".

He just called me, telling me he can't find .250" bullets.
I said "You've fallen victim of the marketing departments, like so many others do. Your bullet is actually. 257" in diameter."
"284 Winchester" that's a 7mm bullet "280 Remington" that's a 7mm bullet "250 Savage that's a .257 bullet "257 Robert's that's a .257 bullet
I've got the option of 87 gr Sierra Varminter or 87 gr Speer Hot-Cor. I don't have a ton of Hot-Cor experience, but I believe it is the better choice on hogs and whitetail.
218 Bee,
They did screw up with the twist rate. And the cartridge fell by the wayside. The wildcat from it saw great success, as we all know. .22-250. I'm on my second barrel on that one.

Good deal, glad you found some more info. I believe the Hot Cor would be a better choice.
Of all the P.O. Ackley improved cartridges the 250 Savage benefited from it the most. My Dad had a 250 Improved built when I was kid on a Sears and Roebuck (maybe Husqvarna) short action rifle with a Douglas barrel and a Unertl scope. I seen him take a coyote at a distance that I could not believe with that rifle(I thought it was a mile away lol). That was probably in the late 60's.

That first pic was for a Savage 11 bolt action. This pic is for a Mauser 98 14 twist bolt action.

Don’t have a 250 Savage but I have a 257 Roberts. I would agree the 87 Hot Cor is a better choice for deer and hogs. I have an old Speer reloading manual. Here is the data for that bullet.

If you are changing bullets and changing the powder, the best way to help your friend and protect yourself is have him bring the rifle over. There are too many variables changing to make guesses, especially in an older rifle and a lever action at that.
One of the hardest lessons for me to learn in business was learning to say no to some work or potential clients.
His safety and your reputation and bank account are worth doing it the right way.
One more vote for the Hot-Cor.
fwiw - H414/Win 760 (same powder) is a handy powder to have on hand. It is the most accurate powder in my .260 with 100 grain Barnes TTSX.

The whole point when the cartridge was developed was to achieve 3000 fps, hence the name ".250-3000." That was the marketing that succeeded in those days.
In order to achieve 3000 fps they cut the bullet weight down to 87 grains. That's how the 87-grain weight for .257" bullets came to be in the first place. If modern slower burning powders had been available in those days the 87-grain bullet may not have come into being at all.

Is this for a 99 Savage or a bolt gun? The 99 Savage has a 14 twist and the Remington bolt gun will have 10 twist. Factory ammo used to be 87gr bullets, but the 100gr will work. H4895 is a good powder for that, I ran the Varget through QuickLoad and it is very low on the recommended powders but if that is what you got then use it. the early 99's were slow twist, later they change to 1-10, the remy cor loct 100gr shoots very well, I quite reloading, but kept some 250 brass that I cold part with p.s. if you have the early 99 use Siera 87gr , ck ken waters pet loads for data AND don't mean to high jack the thread, but I do have some 250's 99's for sale

I am sure he would appreciate more brass. I'd be happy to buy it from you, if you'd ship it.
He's the only one I know with this cartridge. The dies I'm going to use are also his, passed down from his dad.

Here is some up to date data if that helps. I have killed a lot of deer with Speer Hot Core bullets mostly in 7x57mm
