If all your Guns had 18-22” barrels, what rod length do you prefer?

Mine is 40". But, I've got to be able to clean anything that comes through the shop.
You need to add the length of your actions to your 22" barrel. Plus a little slack, so the cleaning rod handle doesn't get too close to the action.

40" here, Steyr M1895 has a 30.1" barrel (plus action length as JG mentioned), and who knows maybe one day I'll get a Marlin Goose Gun. I don't feel 40" is overly long for even my 16" ARs, I do use a shorter one for handguns though.

Just because no one has mentioned it. I measure from the butt of the stock to the muzzle...I don't want the cleaning rod's handle being put in a bind against the comb of the stock. What that does is change the angle of the rod where more than likely the jag will make contact with the muzzle, that is a huge no no for me. There are some handles that won't impact the comb but it's a consideration I make when choosing which rod I use.

There are some handles that won't impact the comb but it's a consideration I make when choosing which rod I use. The 36-inch Pro Shot cleaning rod that I use has a handle that's only 5/8" in diameter that allows it to easily pass over a rifle stock when cleaning a barrel. The shorter rod offers more stiffness in getting the job done.

Had to measure my rod, never done that before... Rod is 42" with a 4" handle so it's 46" overall. Then I have a couple of "takedown" rods that are anywhere from 8" to 36" or so.

So I ended getting a 36” rod and I wish it was 39-40”

I am still looking for the perfect apron, one with reinforced knee areas would be perfect. Some people live an entire lifetime & wonder if they ever made a difference in the world, a veteran doesn't have that problem. Reagan

I have a couple of 40" rods, and a few shorter. I tend to grab the 40's because I know they'll work with whatever I'm cleaning at the time.
