Anybody in the local DFW area got a planer that could flatten/resurface a favorite cutting board of mine? Its white oak approx 13x10.5x1.5 thick. It got really wet and now has a slight bow in it? The local cabinet shop guy went out of business after the covid garbage.

Too bad you aren’t closer to me, but I’m over 120 miles away. Call the hardwood lumber suppliers in DFW. One of them probably has a big planer or knows who does. Call Woodcraft also and tell em what you need.

I have a 26" drum sander that could fix it, where you at? Water is not your friend if your a cutting board.

Does your local High School have a wood shop? If so, go talk to the instructor.

Thanks for the tips, i just figured maybe someone here near Ft. Worth where I am , might have one in their wood-shop. The only thing i know about planers is that they expensive little buggers.

To plane that bowed cutting board, it would seem obvious to feed it into the planer with the bow facing up. But that may not work too well, because the bottom is also bowed and not flat. Just running it through a planer isn’t as simplistic as it sounds. Find someone that knows what he’s doing.

I am not an expert, but it may be best to steam it and use some clamps to flatten it out during/after the steaming process. Google is your friend here. Steam Cutting BoardGood luck!

Is it a long grain board or an end grain board?

Doesn’t look too bad. I’d use a handplane on the edges of the concave side until it sat flat and didn’t rock. Then run it through the planer with that side down till the top side was flat. Then flip it over and flatten the concave side. You’d lose some thickness.

Just running it through a planer isn’t as simplistic as it sounds. Find someone that knows what he’s doing. Wouldn't it be appropriate to plane one side, drop the planer down 1/32", flip the board, and plane the other side? Repeat until it's flat again.

If the board, with the concave side down, doesn’t rock, yes you can run the board in with the convex side up. Then flip it over. Unfortunately, in my experience, you’d have to be lucky to have that concave sit solid and not rock. Since the planer will duplicate the bottom side of the board, the bottom side needs to be, if not actually flat, at least stable and not rocking due to a minor twist. I hope that makes sense.
So, put it on a flat surface, with concave side down and see if it sits flat and doesn’t have a corner-to-corner rock. If it sits solid, take it to the planer, with the convex side up.
There is another way to do it. Using a ‘carrier’ board under it, a shim could be employed to make the board sit flat on that carrier board. Then plane the top side till flat, discard the carrier board and plane the remaining side. I’d probably use the handplane method, but both will work. Naturally, some basic skill with a handplane would be required.
