Just got word the landowner sold the place out from under us (wilhunt and I. He’s been there 23 years.)
Need to vacate by Jan 19…so looking to get on lists for next year. Hopefully be able to move our crap before then
2-4 responsible hunters in the Hill Country/ San Saba county now. Open to all the counties bordering it. Maybe more. No far west or far east TX.

It is tough after being on the Hunting lease that long. Was a nice place with very good owner, We do get to hunt this season which is a plus. Not the best of hunting but still a nice place to go whenever we wanted...

At least you got a few months notice. Gonna be filling your tags this season?

that stinks!!! had it happen a few times but the new owners wanted everyone gone before season started, at least you have a little bit of time to hunt and get your stuff.

Same situation, we had to be off in April and it sold last month.

Feel your pain, unfortunately for me I was hunting with my dad and his buddies when it happened and years later I'm still trying to find a group I fit well with. Best of luck.

Lease went back 40+ years of my family leasing the land. They didn't sale, just built new homestead and stopped leasing.

40 years wow! that would really be a tough one. Maybe this is the year for things to go your way.

I feel your pain - my Dad was on one back in the 1950's to the mid 1970's -

we have been on our place 17 years now - unfortunately it is the way of the world today - grandparents or parents own a ranch and once they pass away the kids have no interest or connection so they sell it - you will find a new one - you have to work at it but something will come along

Low deer deer count in the Hill Country? Guess 1 hunter per 100 acres has its issues.

I've experienced it too, but let's not blame owners or their heirs too terribly much. Afterall, it is their land. Sometimes the heirs have plenty of connection to a ranch, but selling is the most equitable (and I daresay the smartest) way to distribute the inheritance. Our 4 have been told they WILL sell the place as soon as feasible, if we don't sell it before we cross over. And our kids get along!

One thing about losing a lease - you learn real quick what you will and won't put on the next one. Best of luck to y'all and I hope you find an even better place.

Happened to me twice a LONG time ago. I bought my own little 133 acre POS place that isnt good for anything but hunting, fishing, 4wheelering and raising grandkids.

More like 1 per 50 actually.

Good thought. The only problem is those are available now…and we”d need to pay for 2 places at once for this season. I’ll bring this back up in December when someone might be dropping off. I know some managers keep a waiting list for that pirpose.

We’ll be starting to tear down soon. 1-4 hunters. Need to be out by 1/19/25. Any upcoming openings nearby (Cherokee, San Saba County) would be welcome to simplify the move. For me alone, everything between Abilene, Red River, Texarkana and Hill Country is possible. Prefer under $2,500

Getting close to the date to be off our lease. As mentioned earlier have been on this lease 23 years.
Would like to find something near San Saba, Mills, Lampasas or Burnet counties. Maybe i should say roughly 150 miles North, South or West of New Braunfels. Senior hunter that will help take care of property with respect for animals. Water and electric would-be a plus.

Folks complain that they lost their lease because the landowner sold.

My brother forced the sale of the place this year.

We had been there for 59 years, I got to hunt opening weekend and that ends my deer hunting forever at my age.

Losing your lease is not as bad as losing your land.

'Very sorry to hear and I certainly hope you still can find some kind of opportunity to still hunt. I know brothers exist that are truly best friends and easily come to agreement on just about everything. However, I do not think it is the norm. I'm kind of on the other side of the equation you experienced, although I didn't "force" anything. At my mother's death, my older brother and I owned two places across the road from each other in south Gillespie County. Me and my family stayed at the newer place and he and his family stayed at the other. But, it was obvious that he thought we ought to own everything together, forever, with him, of course, calling the shots and me being the maintenance man, aka step-and-fetch-it. Whether for bad or good, the area continued to explode with people tooling around the area on Harleys, bicycles, runners and ego farmers putting in "wineries." My brother and I could agree that it was no longer the Hill Country that we grew up knowing and that it was time to sell. I did the work getting the places separated and I sold my side first. He got AML Leukemia and passed the next year, but his widow, eventually sold. I have zero regrets that I got my life financially completely separate from his/theirs. On the whole, I would advise against ever owning anything, especially a recreational property, with a sibling(s).

I’ll have to sell in the next couple of years. Bought 133 acres of junk land in Montague County a LONG time ago for chump change. Land around it is now selling for about $10,000 per acre. I’m 82 yoa and don’t need the money but am hitting the point where I have to depend on others to get things done. That sux. Heavy taxes on the gain and that also sux.

Wife is good about a lot of things but business negotiating isn’t her strong point.

To the guys that are leasing, that greedy landowner could be in a financial tax jam. Several small landowners around me have had to bail out.

Around my area South of Bowie are several state and/or federal owned wildlife areas that allow hunting. I don’t know much about them but I have known guys who successfully hunted on them. I expect they are draw hunts but should be worth looking into.

Dave, you could sell me your place for $1 an acre, then not worry about any tax issues.
