What are the real benefits to joining? Is it worth it?

There's also the allegedly more conservative AMAC.

I have an offer through our ADP discounts to sign up for 5 years on AARP for a very low price.

The best medicare supplemental policy (United) for my wife required an AARP membership. I was not pleased. They, were at least, extremely anti-gun, funded lots of liberal causes; 'seemed like they were taking advantage of older folks so they could take their membership money and donate to lefty causes.

AARP is a marketing company that is paid for from your taxes. And run by D's.

Our tax money goes to AARP? They are funded by tax dollars?

Do you have any sources for that factoid?

If every THFer is already funding AARP through taxes whether we like it or not, then what's wrong with taking advantage of the discounts?

AMAC is for conservatives, AARP is for Libs.
I’m an AMAC member.

How do you like AMAC? Is it worth it? What are the benefits?

Membership is cheap. Magazine is informative. They offer health and life ins and travel help. Already have lifetime heath ins. Haven’t availed myself of any of the real benefits yet.

THF always remains humorous. I thoroughly enjoy paying more like the rest of us on here. Don't need no friggin discounts.

We have these ADP discounts through work on a ton of things but I've never really used them for anything.

So apparently from what I've learned on here is that AARP is funded by tax money and AMAC is funded by membership? I wonder if that's correct?

We get AARP offers all the time. They never get opened and are thrown in the garbage where it belongs.

So what is the benefit of either one?

There doesn't seem to be too much benefit to belong to either.

I’m supporting a conservative company that promotes conservative ideas. If I never use their services it’s still money we’ll spent…at least for me.

I feel for you, Turkey. Nobody is giving you any kind of a straight answer and that’s frustrating. I have the same questions as you but never really pondered them. If you ever figure it out let me know, please.

I think AARP used to be pretty good, with discounts on a lot of things for seniors if you were a member. However, with the coming of Obamacare they turned into a marketing company selling insurance. I don't know if they get tax money, or if so how much, but I just got annoyed at their continuous cheerleading for what I considered liberal policies (particularly Obamacare) and dropped my membership years ago.

I used to have auto insurance through Hartford at a pretty good rate, but it required AARP membership. I've gone elsewhere.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

The low response kind of tells me that not many find either organization beneficial.

AARP was a staunch supporter of Obama Care. They will never get a dime from me.

From long time members of such organizations most folks I’ve talked with said that benefits were not worth the dues they paid.

Well, here's a funny for yall. In renewing my homeowners insurance, the best rate that I got was through Hartford, BUT, only on the condition that I sign up for an AARP membership to get that discount. For a $12 annual AARP fee, it was worth reducing my home policy by @ $1,700 and I've got higher policy limits than my previous carrier offered.

You better believe that I'll be sending AARP my thoughts on political issues regularly, by God, I'm gonna get my $12 worth of entertainment!! Guess I'll also see how much their discounts are worth at restaurants, car rentals, etc.
