Do they work as advertised?

Can you feel any heat being put off?

Yes, but I do recommend the heat deflector. I have sat around many a solo stove fire in cooler climates, and the deflector was well worth it. While I understand they are a fuel (wood) hog, this contraption is on my list of future acquisitions.

They smoke when you first light them, but once they get rolling they're very smoke free. And yes, they eat logs fast.
