Took the wife and kid to N&S Thursday for their birthday dinner, they were born on the same day, not planned. We be put off going here based on the reviews I’ve heard of the Friday-Sunday crowd of being a little ghetto, Thursday night definitely wasn’t ghetto, and I definitely brought down the class of the establishment. I showed up in golf shorts, and a collared shirt, semi dirty Nike shoes. They let us in after a brief discussion with the manager.

Service was top notch. Food was good. The place is grossly overcrowded and noisy as all get out.

I wanted the 10 pound Bearing Sea crab at $130 a pound but the wife wasn’t having it. It was her birthday so I told her the menu is open to whatever she wants.

We started with the lobster mac & cheese, this was way better than what we have previously had anywhere else, the kid loved it.

We also started with their Park Cities sushi roll, the 1 piece I got was great, wife and kid devoured the rest of it.

After that was field green salads, I elected to have the blue cheese dressing while the wife got the raspberry vinegarette. I’m by no means a fan of thin dressings on a salad. The blue cheese was out of this world good. I’d go back just for this salad.

Entree was a chateaubriand, 3 bone filet mignon. Cooked to medium rare, we should’ve ordered rare but they recommended medium rare, it was good. The most tender filet mignon we’ve ever had. I gnawed on the bone, had to class down the joint some.

Side dish was a phenomenal brussel sprout dish with a spicy chili sauce.

Desert was a multi layer strawberry cake, very good if you like cake, the icing was trash but to be fair I can’t stand any icing.

We had a few drinks, I ordered a Makers Mark OF, I think they missed the part about it being an OF, but I wasn’t made about a glad full of Makers Mark. Wife’s got a margarita and a Moscone mule and seemed to like them.

$607 later we left.

Would I go back? Most likely yes, but I’d order the 16 ounce 44 day aged ribeye… or if I’m feeling fancy in my shorts and Nikes maybe the Emperors Platter. It’s damn hard to beat Capital Grille and Four Winds though, so I may have to bring down the class at those joints instead.

I’ve been to four winds many many times. I’ve been to Nick and Sam’s and last Friday night we went to prime 102 in Tyler. In my opinion I’ll pick four winds over all of them. Maybe I’m partial since I live here but I feel I get more bang for my buck and four winds and the food is better and sides are larger.

It’s hard to beat Four Winds, especially on a Wednesday or Thursday night. I’ll pass on the green beans, and their Old Fashioned’s suck, but those steaks are great.

How was Prime-102?

If you’re ever in Rockwall and want a good steak, don’t go to SEAR, I’ll save you money.

Note taken....Prime 102 had good food, the steak was comparable to four winds but like I said I think four winds is better. I had the 16oz rib eye and she had the 8oz filet. we got one side, one appetizer, and a shared a Caesar salad. I had an old fashion and a love street beer. She had two martinis and it was $261 before tip.

Nick & Sam's is good. My favorite is still Al Biernat's. Like you said though, the prices are pretty outrageous. My 2 younger boys start school tomorrow and my youngest request steaks. I picked up Prime NY Strips and Porterhouse for dinner tonight and that will be pretty damn delicious.

Me too on Al Biernat's. I like the service and vibe. They take great care of you in a real not so stuffy way, place is still kinda' loud and fun with outstanding service. I don't order steaks anywhere but my own patio. When at AB's I usually get the Ossobuco. It's outstanding.

The presentation is nicer at Nick & Sam’s, but these 3 Prime steaks cost me less than $40 tonight.

Reason # 47 I don't order steaks in restaurants. I go to a great local meat market and pay top $ for filet's, cook them at home and have a $200.00 restaurant meal for $50.00. It's just as good, most of the time better.

I need to know where you’re getting fillets for $50. The meat market I shop at runs almost $100 for 3 fillets around 8oz each. He’ll even Costco or Tim thumb is $60 for 3 fillets. By the time I’m done cooking I’ve got 3 or 4 hours invested in the meal, and probably $150 plus a mess to clean up.

Those steaks were from H-E-B in Plano. I don’t live near that store, so I typically buy my steaks from Costco Dallas. Excellent USDA Prime steaks typically under $20 per pound. My wife prefers fillets, the prime fillets are closer to $30 per pound.

Purchase a sous vide from ANOVA and you will cook steaks to perfection every single time. Actual active cooking time on this particular meal was well under 30 minutes. Inactive total time was an hour and a half - that is the time that the stakes are immersed in the water bath and the potatoes and broccoli in the oven roasting.

Can't be beat. Get the Cream Spinach to go with it.

Despite my previous comments, we ended up back at N&S last night. It was good, but too damn loud. I’ll be going back to Capital Grill as my go-to steakhouse, however Nuri will be the next place we try.

Played golf with a young man yesterday that has worked at the Maple Ave. location for 3 years. He has two degrees from Mizzou and the waiting gig was supposed to be short term until he found a corporate gig.
He said he was making significantly more money waiting tables than he would be working the suit & tie gig so he blew off the office beat down..
