I don’t think I could even write my name or knew the alphabet before I started. That was a different time though so I don’t know what is standard for kids at that age now.

We do have a very good school system. We hired an officer for overwatch last week. I am fine sending them to school but what should they know is the question?

Same, things change though and I hope they are not behind. That is my fear.

It really depends where they are coming from, you can’t compare a kid that’s been going to montessori or like a primrose to one that hasn’t.

But as far as standards they aren’t high. I wouldn’t stress, it will work it’s self out

Educator wife that retired a few yeas ago said: Know their parent's names, how to print their own names correctly with capital first letter, how to tie their shoes, how to zip or button pants, letter names and sounds of all or most letters, recognize numbers and how to count 1 - 10. Have a respect for authority and peers.

I may not have put that in the order she said, but that's about it.

First day of class, tell them to walk up to the biggest kid in the class and punch them right in the jaw. They will have no problems after that.

Ours went to public. Requirements are using the bathroom by themselves or might have been pre-k I think. If they can read anything and wright their name you are ahead.

These days with woke school teachers, sexual topics pushed, questionable publications in classrooms and libraries. gender and race discussions?

Hopefully a conservative district! They may need to grow up fast through mom and dad's guidance and warnings.

Edit- after rereading thread, I told my boys (now 20 and 23 and always athletes/leaders) to always stand up for others being bullied, respect your teacher, raise your hand and participate, be kind to those who don't fit in, if you have to go #2, aak the teacher in the middle of the lesson to be excused and be proud and blow out the bathroom in the kindergarten and first grade classrooms. All that stuff you wished your dad would've said to you.

My wife teaches kindergarten. If they can write their name they’re way ahead of the game. 1 in 4 can’t recognize their name when written on the wall. I’m talking about a name card on the table at meet the teacher. The teachers in K have to assume they’re potty trained and go from there. The good news is most can do a base level of reading by the end of the year. They know their letters and sounds and can count to 100.

Much of K appears to be teaching structure and modifying behavior for those who’ve been allowed to run wild in the home.

Also let them know you will pick them up and not to go home with anyone else. Show them where you will meet them and what to do if they get lost.

That would be my kid. He literally a head above anybody else in his age and he’s the youngest in the class. He turns 5 tomorrow and is over 50 inches tall, wears a size 1 shoe, and will fight back like a rabid raccoon.

Josh they'll be fine. Colt was ahead of the game just by being able to recognize words, write his name, and do simple math like 1+1 and 2+2. We read to him every night and started him out halfway through preschool on those little reader books and it helped him a lot. Main thing in K is sight words. They'll get new ones every 9 weeks and by the end of the year they need to know them all.
