Two questions about the Omaha Beach assault scene:

1. The doctor doing triage with Wade has what looks like a ying-yang patch on his left shoulder. What is this?

2. Would the priest administering Extreme Unction do it in Latin in 1944, or in English as shown?

Shoulder sleeve insignia of the United States Army 29th Infantry Division, nicknamed the Blue and Gray Division, based on their circular blue and gray badge with a yin-yang design, or monad, a Korean symbol of eternal life. The colors symbolize the Division tradition of being formed by men whose forefathers fought in the Civil War, for both Union blue and Confederate gray. The 116th infantry regiment of the 29th Division was part of the first wave assault to land at Omaha Beach on D Day, June 6, 1944. They suffered heavy losses, but pushed on to relieve and reinforce combat units inland. At the end of September they were fighting on the German border and, in March 1945, were ordered to attack in the heavily defended Ruhr industrial region. On April 3rd, the Division liberated Dinslaken civilian labor camp. They had pushed on to the Elbe River when Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945. The 29th Infantry served in the Army of Occupation in Frankfurt and Bremen until returning to the US on January 4, 1946, where they were inactivated on January 17.

Saving Private Ryan was a great movie. I stlli belive that losing the Academy award to Shakespeare in Love was a travesty.

The 29th currently makes up the Virginia Army National Guard as well. The Virginia Army National Guard's 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation Regiment, and the 29th Infantry Division Band are aligned under the 29th.

Grandpa ( Mom’s Dad ) landed on the 3rd day and he had two brothers who landed during the invasion.

Meanwhile, over in Nuremberg, my Dad’s mom was huddled in her house as a young teenager enduring the Allied bombing raids. Although I don’t know for sure, it’s probable that her dad and/or brothers fought for the Nazis.

Crazy to think that I had both sides of the family over there fighting on opposite ends.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Latin I believe was much more popular then than now. But I’m sure there was a lot of embellishment
