Howdy Guys..
I was thinking of planning a morning or evening hog hunt this weekend to thin out pigs. Will me being in the woods prior to deer season shooting at or near the feeder effect the deer coming to the feeder? Last thing I want to do is let them know Im there. FYI this ranch hasnt been hunted in over 7yrs.
Thanks,
Hogg

If you have that many hogs chances are the deer don't get much action at the feeder anyhow. At least when the hogs are there and that's when the shooting will be anyhow. I'm planning the same thing this weekend.

My guess is if theres deer near your area when the shootin happens well they probly arent gona stick around that area for a little while anyway. If theyre far away, well they arent gona know where the shot came from anyhow.Besides,if hogs are comin to ur feeder and u start shootin the hell out of em,THEY probably wont be back which is a good thing.

Shouldn't hurt too much and will give the deer more to eat.

I have had deer and hogs out and have shot at the hogs killed some missed some and the deer came back out or never moved.
We do not let hogs come out without throwing lead.
I prefer them over deer anyway.JMO

I usually shoot several hogs just before the season especially if they are coming in to the feeder right after daylight.
I've done this the last few years and it seems to make the hogs go nocturnal and keep them away from the feeder enough to at least give the deer a chance to find corn under the feeder when it goes off.
It won't run them off completely, but they will get a little shy when they see their buddies getting busted a few times.
One thing I did last year was hang a metal gong under the feeder and when the hogs came out just before daylight I shot the gong with my .22 and they would run off, and the deer didn't seem to mind.

I sat in the blind, shot a hog, dragged it to the bushes and 15 minutes later had a doe come get some grub.
I shot a buck at a feeder and the other buck that was there kept eating and finally left the area 30 minutes later. Of course, he was a young one but still.

I was in a blind at a friends ranch a few years ago and we had an 8-point and a 6-point buck inside the feeder fence eating corn when a coyote trotted by about half way between the blind and feeder. My friend shot the coyote with his 243, both deer jumped, the 6-pointer jumped the feeder fence and ran to the edge of the trees, the 8-pointer looked around and went right back to eating corn. After a couple of min. the 6-pointer came back and jumped the feeder fence and continued eating. I was amazed.

shootin rifle or bow?
I would be more worried about slobbin my scent all over the place tracking a hog through the woods than I would be shootin.
Also, your gonna have trouble thinnin a hog pop. in one hunt....

My old lease had a rule that all hogs had to be shot. For a few weeks before season, it would sound like war was being fought.

If you are rifle hunting then I say hammer them now. You still have a good month for everything to calm down.
From experience I know now it is better to hammer the hogs now rather than not shoot them at all. The deer will not come in any number if hogs are at the feeder. I would say even if they come back during deer season drop a couple.

Deer wont mind, I fill feeders the same day I'm hunting and have seen deer and hogs come in afterwards. If a hog comes to the feeder anytime and I'm there, bang.

Have you thought about a cross bow. You might be able to kill more hogs that way without running them off. It would be better to kill them rather than run them off with a gun blast. Like mentioned earlier, they will go nocturnal.

I shot at a group last year while a doe was standing 20 yards away. When the hog ran off the doe came in to eat. She had been standing off to the side of the feeder just waiting. I use my 22 mag. I will not kill them on the spot unless you shoot them in the head. I shot at several times and the doe still came in. She might have ran if I pulled out my 06. Shotguns do not seem to bother deer much either.

Kill them all, every chance you get, I prefer semi-auto shotguns and buckshot if close, but kill them with whatever is close, gun, bow, stick, truck...

We shoot hogs at the feeders all the time, and ten or fifteen minutes after the hogs are shot the deer come back to the feeders. They simply sniff the dead hog, and go on eating under the feeder! ...........Don't worry about it! Get you some pork to last till the venison becomes legal!

I doubt it would hurt anything,it might kinda spook the deer that live right there near your feeder, but you'll also see deer during season that are not even in the area of your feeder right now.
Personally I wouldn't hunt this close to season, I like as little activity as possible around my blind from now until opener.

I think they enjoy watching, and are having a celebratory feast...

I shot some hogs at my feeder in Mid-October last season. Didn't hurt a darn thing (except their heads).
Couple seasons back I shot two hogs and sat tight. I had two 120-class 8 pointers eating at my feeder within 15 minutes of putting those pigs on the ground, just 30 yards or so from where the dead pigs were laying. And this is in east Tx, home of the nervous crackhead white-tail!

I think it's a great ideal. You won't get them all but what you will do is run them off that feeder for a while. I may do just that a few days before archery opener. Been wanting to take one with my pistola anyway and may practise with my bow while at it. Great ideal, thank's for bringing it up. I really don't think shooting a few pigs a few days before will hurt anymore than a bunch of noisy dang pigs running the Deer off. I set my main stand up on a game trail leading to the feeder, usually see better Deer off the trail than at the feeder anyway, all I will be doing is running pigs off so my live decoys will stick around longer!!! Here Piggy Piggy!!!
