I sent my grandson a antique Japanese bow, ( over 7' long ) I never had a string for it as I had no desire to shoot, he would like to string it, how to measure?

I am guessing it is a straight bow not one with more recurve look makes a difference.
Pic might help and there are some that know it better than I on here.
Folks at 3Rivers archery, Lancaster Archery, or 60X strings can be helpful with instructions.

https://www.3riversarchery.com/timb...0euIBwP49SaxEjh1yfKq2UfED8BoCvQUQAvD_BwEMaybe something like this. Or if you live near someone who builds a string maybe they could help you out. Unstrung length only tells you part of the story, you really need to brace the bow to figure out your ideal string length. If that bow has an AMO number on it that might help you get there though

You would need to determine the best 'brace height' of the bow then build a string to fit the distance between the nocks.
A string with a flemish twist on at least one end would allow you to twist the string to shorten or lengthen it an inch or more.
