Always hate getting a call from the ranch hand when somethin is found dead. No bullet holes or anything. Laying next to the water. Any guesses?

I don’t know what County this is in but If I had to make a SWAG it would be anthrax. I’d call a biologist and get it tested.

Frio. Haven’t been dry enough for it.

My first guess was lightning followed closely by anthrax. Not sure what else is out there that could take a healthy animal like that.

I’d still call a TP&W biologist after freezing the neck up. I would think they would want to know and would do it for free. If you don’t mind them sniffing around your business.

Anthrax is not dependent on dry weather....if that was your assertion.

In fact... rain water can erode soil and cause a concentration of the spores in low lying areas where the grass is greenest or water sources collect.

Anthrax would be very high on my list of suspected reasons for the death of the animal (judging by its otherwise healthy look).

Kept the head and brain. Will let tpwd take their sample before its euro mounted.
But it’s the only one we’ve found which doesn’t scream anthrax.

Anthrax usually shows itself after extended periods of Drought , followed by rains… Which is a lot of Tx.. You will know soon enough if more animals are found..

Sometimes deer just die. Find a 2nd healthy one dead and there may be cause for concern. At this point, don’t borrow trouble.

We've lost two Axis in the past couple weeks. Fished both out of our lake. It was the peak of the rut and the bucks have been fighting like crazy. We figured they got chased into the lake and drowned.

it's harder to keep them alive than people think.

I've seen animals chased into the water by coyotes or feral dogs and then drown because they're in there so long. If found in or near water, that might be a possibility.

As mentioned I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you or the neighbors start to find dead deer as well. I would burn the carcass if possible and not leave it to nature to dispose of, unless that is your only alternative.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.
