Is it ok to ask for value of a couple of hard to find rifles. I haven't been able to find any comps

I would think so but I’m pretty far from a moderator. Choose your words. I’m sure if it remotely looks like a for sale ad it will go poof.

You can ask for a price check outside the classifieds and put one for sale inside the classifieds but not the other way around.

Pass the gravy.

I have a 700VS in 17 Remington. I think there were only 200 made. The barrel is cut to 24 inches and recrowned, trigger done, McMillan hunter class dipped in maple burl.
I also have a 700ADL Varmint in 17 Remington Fireball. Barrel cut to 22 inches and recrowned, trigger done and sitting in HS Precsion hunter class stock.

The McMillan stock and hydro dip cost more than that. All smithwork done by someone that Builds benchrest rifles.

Lord knows I’m not the authority but unless being chambered in the 17’s kills value I would def think more than $500

How does the modifications affect the value? Obviously the collector looking for original is out, but the others?

The modifications make this very difficult. The mods make them worth way less to me but may increase the value greatly to someone else. These are examples of guns that need sold at auction. That's how you'll find the value. $500 is not a smart guess.

Pass the gravy.

From what I can find the Rem 700 Varmint Stainless fetch a little more ($150-$200) because of stainless steel action/barrel as compared to the standard blued steel 700.

As far as it being chambered in .17 Fireball, I know that they offered it in a the 700 VS in .221 Fireball, but I don't know if it was also in a .17 Fireball. The markings on the barrel will tell you whether this is a factory Remington barrel or an aftermarket barrel.
Remington did do a limited run of Rem 700 CDL SF (stainless steel, walnut stock and fluted barrel) in .17 Fireball.

The last piece of information is determining whether this rifle was a factory chambered Fireball (.221 fireball) or just a standard action that was modified with a new barrel chambered in a Fireball cartridge. If it is a rifle that was chamber in Fireball by Remington then the bolt face will be the clear identifier. For the Fireball cartridge, Remington changed the location of the extractor/ejector to assist in clearing the shorter fireball case. Compare your bolt face to that of a .223 bolt face and it will be a clear indicator of whether the rifle (regardless of current barrel) was produced at factory as either a rifle chambered in Fireball or just a standard bolt face (non-fireball cartridge).

Here is a quote from an old thread on another forum related to extractor / ejector positioning on bolt face. The picture was no longer available..

Sniper's Hide: "The factory .221 action is on the left, .223 on the right. Notice the .221 extractor is located in the 8 o'clock position, the .223 in the 6 o'clock. Also notice the relief next to the ejector in the 12 o'clock position on the .221 and 11 o'clock on the .223.

On the .223 action, spent cases are drug thru the lug path before ejecting. The .221 case is much shorter and when drug thru the lug relief, prematurely releases from the bolt, causing a failure to eject. Remington solved this problem by altering the ejecting system so the .221 case is drawn thru a higher position above the lug recess. Alot of smiths, like the guy who built mine, don't know this difference and chamber .221 FB on .223 donors."

Hope this helps.

The problem is that modifications don't add value, unless you can find a buyer that wants those modifications done to the gun.

A gun made as part of a limited run of 200 would have a lot of value to a Remington Collector, but modifying that gun from it's original configuration by cutting the barrel and putting a new stock on it ruins that value. Collectors want it as close to perfect out of the box condition as possible. As modified they only have value as a shooter. It's no longer a 1 of 200, it's a 1 of 1 that nobody wants.

.17 caliber rifles are a small niche area of the shooting world.

To get top dollar you need to keep advertising until you can find the right person that wants to buy the rifle, or you need to lower the price that someone says "I don't really need or want that, but for that price I can't pass it up."

No offense meant, but I wouldn't even pay $500 for them, because I have no interest in shooting a .17 beyond the .17 HMR I already own (which I haven't shot in over 5 or 6 years).

Modifications are either neutral or subtract value.

17 caliber doesn't help anything.

I thought 500 was high, but I guess if gunbroker sold listings show better results then good for you. It's a very uncommon caliber because it has limited uses and remington has been passed up inarguably by tikka and bergara and arguably by many others. So I'd just make your best guess on sold listings.
