It’s been probably 10 years since I took a wood stocked rifle hunting.

This year I decided to take a rifle I’ve had for 20 years but never hunted with.

Ruger 77 RSI in 308. It is only 7.5lbs with Weaver Classic V7 2-7x32. It has a hard rubber 1/2” recoil pad so it’s rather unpleasant to shoot with full power 308 loads. I loaded up some discontinued 150 Speer Mag tips over 40 grains of TAC which was good for 2500 fps from an 18,5” barrel. The reduced loads were pleasant to shoot.

I’ll just be hunting in timber this year. My longest shot through a draw is about 130 yards. Here is a pic.

Anyone else hunting old fashion this year?

I hunt with wood stocks every year. Rarely use any synthetic stocks.

Well I don’t have a picture so I don’t know if it counts. M77 Mk II in .257 Roberts in pristine condition wearing a Meopta 3-9x40. At least for the woods. The pipeline will see carbon fiber and stainless.

I have several wood stocked guns, and several synthetic stocked guns. Depends upon where I'm going and the weather which ones I'll use.

The 356 Winchester Big Bore has pretty much become my go to short to moderate range pig gun now. Would not hesitate to pop a deer with it either if the right one were to show up but either way its become a constant companion and is always ready and waiting.

Plan on hunting most of the year with these:

On my western mule deer hunt I’m going to take the synthetic stocked Weatherby, but if I do find myself in a blind with a rifle, I’ll prolly take my newly acquired 7x57, pending the old K-6 weaver still holds a zero and I can find a load that will print acceptable groups.

My schtick is hunting with old milsurps, so mostly all wood. I do have some trusty non wood guns though if foul weather may be in store. Tikka T3 Stainless 270, Browning Maxus 12 gauge, Ruger American .17 HMR, and of course the ARs. I play a lot of stringed instruments so I think the admiration for a nice piece of timber carries over from that.

My main hunting rifle is a Remington 788 in .308. Other guns that I will hunt with depending on my mood. BAR in .270. Marlin 3030, Marlin 1885 in 45/70, Rossi 92 in .357. All of the above are wood stocked. I also hunt with a Ruger 77/357 with plastic stock, Savage 12 in 6.5CM, or a .300BLK AR if the mood strikes.

The weather has to be REALLY BAD and I've got to be REALLY MAD at a deer/hog/turkey/etc. for me to pick up one of my synthetics.

Life is too short to hunt with Tupperware (he said as he zipped up his flame-retardant suit). flame

Thats a really clean 375!

I bought one years ago at a Dallas gun show from an individual. It was pretty much brand new in the box and he said he took it bear hunting one time and that was it. Dont remember what I paid for it but when I got it home and took everything out of the box there was a 1984-85 Texas Parks and Wildlife outdoor annual in the box. One night I got bored and started flipping through the book and near the back he had a page with one corner folded down like he was marking that page or something. It was near the back of the book where all the regulations are listed by county and this page contained the seasons and bag limits for Dallas County. Guess what......in 1984-85 Dallas county still listed a season for Black Bear. NO JOKE!!!! scared

I own just one centerfire rifle with a synthetic stock and consider it a strict utility gun. It's the one I take when I want no worries about theft or abuse.

I can remember when it was common to look at the stocks of multiple rifles before making your purchase to decide which wood you liked best. Maybe there's still a few stores out there that will allow you to do that.

Thats an awesome rifle.

I'm beginning to take an interest in lever guns that are not a Winchester Model 94 and not a .30/30

Going by what I found on the serial number this one was made in 1982. As far as I know it was unfired when I got it. The support for loading components is pretty lean but there is some and fortunately it came with some ammo and a box of bullets.
