It doesn't make sense for me to hold out much longer to have prostate surgery. My urologist at Hendrick in Abilene said I was not a candidate for a Urolift and their preferred treatment is the traditional TURP. Trying to decide if it is worth the trouble and extra travel to Austin or Dallas or Temple for a HoLEP. Anyone been down this road lately?

I tried the Urolift a few years ago but I had too much scar tissue to successfully get the tube in. I was screaming like banshee so they stopped. Maybe if I was sedated! Best of luck with the procedure.

Thanks Jimbo. Looks like a TURP end of next month. My advice to fellow THFers: Just say NO to getting old.

There is a new procedure called Aquaablasion. Done with water jets instead of hot lasers. check it out.
I had the Greenlight Laser procedure. I guess it worked "okay".

Thank you for posting this. Glad to know I am not alone! Diagnosed with BPH several years ago and never really had significant issues until the last 12-18 months. Urologist says I'm a "challenging case". After a cystoscopy he determined my bladder was in good shape and that I had a very enlarged prostate. Glad to know my bladder was fine but not certain we needed to go through all that just to rule it out.
I go back in September for a check up and possibly schedule a Urolift for Oct. Told him the only way i would agree is under general anesthesia.
Grateful for every sunrise and sunset I get to witness. - Jason

Had the TURP on Tuesday morning. Walked a mile this morning. It's not without its discomforts -- especially when they remove that aquarium tubing they call a Foley catheter. We'll see how it works out next few days. So far so good.

What is TURP? HoLEP? What is the green light laser procedure? Urolift? Recently diagnosed and trying to figure out which way to go.

What is TURP? HoLEP? What is the green light laser procedure? Urolift? Recently diagnosed and trying to figure out which way to go. 12/4/24 I will be 2 months post op from a Urolift. Backstory is I had been dealing with BPH and other impacts from that for 3+ years. Some discomfort off/on and definite quality of life and inconvenience issues but nothing I could not work around. What changed my mind was talking with my urologist about the long term effects of BPH and the challenges it can place on your bladder. I took urination for granted until I couldn't. I am 56 and prior to 3 years ago was on 1 Rx that I have been on for 10 years for breathing/allergies. Aside from that very healthy and active. With BPH I was prescribed numerous meds. All came with side effects...some tolerable and some not. BUT they were only a 'band aid' and not a solution. I share because if you are not into taking meds like me and are on the fence about having a procedure I would recommend it if appropriate. Mine was done under general anesthesia and took 15 minutes. I went back to work Tuesday 10/8/24. 6 weeks for full recovery but the symptoms I had prior are not an issue now. I would recommend taking it easy for 5-7 days after the procedure. I went back to work too quick.
Grateful for every sunrise and sunset I get to witness. - Jason
