Who's bought a new Tundra or one of the new Tacomas? Any issues with the twin turbo V6 or inline 4?

I like the look of the new Tacomas but not so sure about the turbo inline 4 and they're mighty expensive for a mid-size truck. The Tacoma has been such a reliable workhorse for 2 decades. I hope Toyota didn't screw it up.

Thoughts from some of you motorheads who know more about it than I do?

Yeah, when the Tacos cost as much as the Tundras and only come with an inline 4 as an option, something's wrong!

Actually 3 decades. Introduced in 1995. I have a '98. Had a Toy single cab 1985 solid front axle 4WD PU before that. I'd stay away from the Tundra until there is more history on them.

I don't know if you can buy a Tundra right now. The turbo v6 is having issues right now.

I will say the turbo 4 is not proven either. I am a Toyota fan.

That's what I'm thinking. I have a 2019 Taco but it's not 4X4 so thinking about a new one, but I'll pass for another year or two.

We have a 4x4 offroad taco 4.0 liter bought in 2015 with 5k miles and fast forward has about 130k now. Had a 2004 tundra and sold it years later with about 250k miles. After having this taco all these years I do miss the full size pickup and will eventually buy another tundra although I prefer the 5.7 liter. The 2004 didn't have the 5.7 but was an excellent vehicle.

Short story about the tundra, Mr. Wagoner in Brady let the wife and I take that tundra (we hadn"t bought it yet) to San Angelo for the weekend--we left our car with him. While on the road outside of Eden, DPS stopped us for an unknown reason as we weren't speeding or violating any other traffic laws. Two troopers walked up to driver/pass door ( I had all windows down) and said " We haven't seen the new full size 4 door Tundra yet, may we look at it"
We said sure hop in. They didnt although we opened up the rear doors so they could view the backseat area, we all had a good laugh but we"ll never forget that innocent traffic stop.

We bought my wife a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road. It has the six speed manual transmission and it’s been perfect.

The 2024 TRD Pro has an inline 4? That must be new and that would be atrocious.

It's been around for a while.

It's a beast.

Topping the engine lineup is a hybrid powertrain that Toyota calls i-Force Max. It pairs the turbocharged engine with a hybrid battery pack and an electric motor to increase output to a lofty 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. It's optional for the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited trims and standard on the TRD Pro and Trailhunter.

Isn't this turbo 4 cylinder changed substantially from the previous versions of Toyota's turbo charged 4cyl? I know they beefed the truck versions up but I think only the valve train and fuel systems are common to older versions.

I think the engine (turbo 4) was new for 2022 anyway. Again, I am a Toyota boy and have owned 8 different ones starting with a 1977 Celica fastback in 1977.

I couldn’t buy a Taco, too small for me.
I won’t buy a new Tundra unless they change engine options.

I liked my older Tacoma but with all the issues with motors right now in the tundra I’m not even considering one at the moment.

Lol, I've had 12 Toyotas, done full engine swaps, and all that jazz.... the turbo 4 came out in 22 but is in a ton of lexus, and Toyotas. No issues yet. Also I've been following this engine because it's gonna be in the new 4runner that I've been waiting for ever since I sold my 20 4runner in 22 to jump on the new one that they kept pushing back to 25....

Sounds like you're trolling to me DB!

Yeah, I'm a huge toyota guy. We are on the list for the all new GX 550, we went by yesterday to ask them about the GX being on hold for quality control. The said yes it's on hold because of a sunroof drain problem, but I heard it was because of the same V6 turbo engine that other cars including the Tundra are having..... heading to the toyota dealership to ask questions and probably get on the 4runner list. I'll probably hold off on the GX till stuff gets straightened out.

4runner and taco have the same platform.

I’m not interested in a hybrid and I can’t imagine many of the TRD fanboys are either.

Side note. I had a Toyota Hilux pull up next to me today. Basically a Toyota Tacoma with a diesel engine.

I had one in the sand box. They are superb trucks. I wish they sold them here.

[Linked Image] I have had my 2024 Tundra for 9 months now and like it more every day. In sport mode it is zippy with a great ride. I had a 2019 previously and loved the V8. No problems with either
