Doctor is recommending ablation for my A-fib - have any of you gone through it? Frankly, it scares me a bit.

I had the surgery about a year ago…..I felt an immediate improvement as soon as I woke up and no longer in AFIB. It was a very easy recovery and I highly recommend it to solve an AFIB problem.

DO IT!
Your heart has built escape electrical pathways, that shouldn't be there. Ablation will burn those out. I have several friends that had it done, and their lives improved. The Doc that's going to burn yours out did it yesterday, then he's going to do yours. Then the next day he's going to do it again.
Now, I hope to put the fear of God in you. Remaining in A-fib you could have a heart attack and die. Or, you could build clots that cause you to have a stroke. Then you might end up as cognitive as Joe Biden. Just sayin.

My cardiologist mentioned this procedure last visit. More testing in progress.

The biggest risk of AFib is not heart attack but stroke and puts you in the higher risk for an occlusive stroke (versus a hemorrhagic variety).
Get the ablation done ASAP. Relatively minor procedure.

My wife has had 3 ablations and 3 cardioversions(sp). first ablation lasted about 3 weeks, 2nd a little over 2 weeks, 3rd lasted till we got home(2 hrs.). Cardioversions never lasted more than a few days. After 5 years now she wore that 24 hr monitor again recently. Medicines are helping finally and she has been on Eloquis all this time. She says she feels fine but she is still in A-fib. All I can say is if I ever end up with A-fib, I know who I wont be seeing.

My wife has had two and while it’s unnerving to think about a heart procedure, she’s glad she had it done.

I recommend Dr. Adam Shapira at the Baylor Heart Hospital in Plano. He is the Director of the electrolysis department of the hospital. One of the best in the country for this surgery.

I had it done twice, first time didn't work, changed Docs and the second one fixed it and it remains fixed (knock wood) I hope you have good insurance the price of Eliquis will cause your heart to beat faster. ![mad mad](/forum/images/graemlins/default/mad.gif)

Well, I have something slightly different, it's called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (still a form of a-fib).
I went in for an ablation, and the dr and I decided 'no-go' on the table as he had the probe in my heart. He said that the 'short circuiting' nerves were so close to the main bundle that there was a realistic chance that I'd need a pacemaker after the procedure. So I've been taking medication twice a day instead that keeps the 'butterfly heartbeat' from happening.
The procedure itself is really quite cool, and the only discomfort is when they stick you in the leg to access the artery, but that only lasts a moment. Being able to see the electrical mapping of one's heart on a monitor in real-time is fascinating. Afterwards you do have to lay flat on your back as still as possible until the artery patches up adequately - I think they had me like that for six hours. So if you're prone to low back pain or discomfort, you may not enjoy that part.

I had it performed back in 2016 with 80% success. I was having 2-3 major episodes per year beginning in 2012 and after ablation on 3 major episodes since 2016. The worst part of this procedure is removing that gawd awful medical duct tape from the groin area where they enter the femoral.

Relax easy peasy, will make you feel a lot better. After my ablation, I have since had a watchman implant, now no more blood thinners. Almost total stroke risk elimination. Life is a whole lot better ![up up](/forum/images/graemlins/default/cup.gif)

The procedure is much easier now…. Didn’t feel any pain…. they put me under and when I woke I immediately felt better…..no pain or scarring where they went in on both sides of my groin area….no stitches just a bandaid on each side and no bleeding….

Have you had bypass surgery? If yes, did you have Afib before the surgery? No - no bypass. I have been dealing with afib since 1978. Last few years has gotten worse, more fatigue, then ER visits in Feb 2023 and Jun this year.

I had it done 2 years ago and it has been great. My biggest problem was congestive heart failure caused by my a-fib. Mine was done with heat.my wife is having it July 17 because she has already had a severe stroke in 2017 and now her a-fib is breaking thru her medication. Her Dr. is going to use cold to freeze the spots.

I've had two and there is nothing to it. The 2nd one they kept me awake for 2.5 hours into the procedure which was uncomfortable but the results were well worth it.

I had no clue this surgery (ablation) was so common. Actually feeling a lot better about going through the procedure. Could have been the crack about ending up like Biden...
