They seem to be advertised as a spring/summer plot, but has anyone tried planting them late summer/early fall? It has gotten to where our first frost is late November here the last few years. Oats/wheat don’t have much forage early, looking for a good plot option for sept, oct, and until it frost.

I planted IC Peas in October in a section where I also planted oats. They came up in mid-October and the deer wiped them out in about 2 weeks. I only planted 50lbs as they were left over from my summer planting. If you only have a small area to plant (less than 1 acre, it is going to be a waste of time) unless you are ok with only feeding for a 2-3 week windown. If you have 5 acres as example and plant 2 acres in IC peas and the other 3 acres as a Fall plot, it might be worth the effort. One other thing to note is that in late September/October, acorns may be dropping too

Thanks for the info, that’s what I was curious about. Did you seed your peas with the oats or keep them separated like you suggested? I have 3 plots, two in the 12-15 acres range, and the other about 30. There are acorns around, but my past experience with oats/wheat is that there hasn’t been much foliage or activity until maybe thanksgiving. Looking to get more activity in oct/early November

And the green patches are even better after season, was thinking of lightly mixing them with the winter grazing mix, so if they do well, they won’t choke the mix out

We just planted ten 1/2 to 3/4 acre plots. Rain the next day. Should see the results in about ten days to 2 weeks. Planted pretty heavy, 100 lbs/acre. Hope to see results till first frost about mid to late November.
