I don’t know what bit this pointer, but guessing it was a spider. There were no fang marks. It started as a golf ball sized knot on top of head Sunday afternoon, then swelled up her eye. 24 hours later it popped and the tiny red spot turned into gaping wound. Other areas also developed. Started a daily flushing routine, antibiotics and antibiotic ointment.

I haven’t seen anything like that. I’ve been trying to avoid the vet. I do go if the dogs really need to, but dang her prices have doubled.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Think I saw what got the dog today. Saw a large black hornet about 1.5” long, yellow and black abdomen, flying around the backyard at ground level. Looked pretty wicked, could easily done the damage to my pointer. She’s always chasing any moving object within reach, this one must not have like it.

That is gnarly looking. Hold a rag on it with warm water with epsom salt a couple times a day. Hope he heals up without any problems. Buying a bird dog is the cheapest part of owning one.

The combo of antibiotics, antibiotic ointment and diluted iodine flush twice daily has the wound closing up nicely.

Black hornets look intimidating and only the female has a sting. Injects a paralyzing sting to other insects. Though painful, it does not cause necrosis. The damage to your dog was probably a spider, widow or recluse. Glad your routine has it under control.

That sounds like a cicada hawk https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cicada_Killer_with_2_cicadas.jpg But it wouldn’t cause a wound like that their sting is mild. Think it is something else.

This gyp is an accident waiting to happen. Porky incident with a baseball sized abscess, rattlesnake bite, this incident with I’m guessing a spider bite, and numerous other health issues since I brought her home at 5 months. She does have a good nose, and is steady on wild birds though. Only 9 more weeks til our Montana trip.

Looks a whole lot better 68. The purchase price is the cheapest thing about owning bird dogs.
