Came across this fella this morning. About 3' long. A different color than I've seen before. The westerns are generally a sorta dark golden/tan color. I wonder if this is a western, or something else?

Almost all I see are this color.

Could be getting close to molting maybe?

When I gassed them I would get color variations like that. It didn't seem to be related to age.

Beautiful snake! I’ve caught them almost black (Matagorda bay), to red (Sweetwater), to almost white (Salado) like that one.

I gassed and sold a bunch one time and one was the color of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill. The guys at the buyer's place made good sport of me and the pink snake

The only one I've seen that light was down on Padre Island. I figured it was an adaptation to the lighter colored sand vs normal dirt.

But it's sure a Texas rattlesnake.

Here’s another Texas rattlesnake I picked up with a rake, like a fool with a cell phone in the other hand.

Looks like it got a tint of blue.

Both areTimber (or canebrake) rattlesnakes…..same one as found in New England….huge range and typically passive snakes…

Yep, when mature..... a BIG, Thick, Strong snake. And as you said.....normally a non-aggressive, mild tempered snake (if not harassed).

We have them in parts of East Texas.

I saw one of these last year in Foard County but a lot smaller.

I've never seen one that color. Pretty cool

The one I came across was very similar color on a limestone outcropping. Mostly light grey with black and white outlined diamonds….

I don’t have ready access to the pics. I looked on line for pics similar to the one I came across. They were in an old
Laptop that I saved the hard drive and have jump drives with old pics.

The light one was similar to the one triplesnake posted above and this photo I pulled from a google search trying to find images of similar snakes.


The dark one was just a little lighter than this one and I had an old cellphone pic. I don’t believe that it was melanistic but just a really dark individual….


The red pair I caught at my grandparents place in Sweetwater. Both were dark red colored and I thought it was stain from the red soil and thought they would be “normal” color once they shed. I kept them them for several years and they both shed multiple times always retaining their red color. Looked something like this.



And as a bonus I came across this piebald rattlesnake picture while looking for pictures representing the one I came across. This is one very cool rattlesnake!
