How bad is this in your experience? Will he heal? Wife and I don't believe in measures that leave an animal in pain.

Been an interesting day. Walking Toast our big 95 lb golden retriever on leash later this morning and a small or miniature about 15 lbs Schnauzer gets off lash and runs over to attack Toast. Toast just stands there until the little dog bites and then they tussle. The Schnauzer clamps on to his hind leg cutting a vein and breaking his leg at the tibia and fibula. It was just flopping. He is at a local vet getting vein fixed and stabilized. Then we take him to drop off for orthopedic surgery later this afternoon. Schnauzer owners are helping and paying.

Your dog will have a lengthy recovery. After it’s all over I’d push to have the schnauzer put down, it’s a menace to society.

It will heal. Hate to see it though.

Your poor puppy dog. He's a good-hearted man. He'll be 100% in no time healing from a broken leg cannot be a serious as a dog knee ACL repair. We had to deal with that many years ago. Glad to see the owner of the other dog stepped up.
Looks like he is in great spirits by the way. He'll be as good as new soon enough.

The other dog owners need to pay for all expenses and the attack dog needs to get the rusty needle.

That must be one badazz schnauzer. A bite that breaks a leg of a much bigger dog sounds like something a pitbull would do. I wonder if the schnauzer identifies as a pit?

Edit: Don't dope him up too much. Dogs don't know they are still injured when they get pain meds. They will try to use the injured body part and run the chance of messing it up.

We went through that once. It was horrible. After a second one we had to put her down.

Dogs are 3 legged animals with a spare. He will get better. The advice about limiting pain meds should be heeded.

It's in the upper echelon of weird things that I have witnessed.

The other dog owner should cover all expenses. I bet they will use their homeowners insurance to cover it. If they do hopefully Karma will bite them with an insurance cancelation notice.

Prayers for your golden. They are big sweethearts. I would have shot or stomped the brains out of the unrestrained dog. There is no excuse for an unrestrained dog in a public place or on someone else’s property.

The younger they are, the better off they'll be also.

The recovery is going to be brutal. This is going to sound awful and I'm not sure I could do it but amputation would likely be a better recovery for Toast. Good luck!!!

Being a rear leg will make recovery better than on the front. You may need to build something for your dog to enter and exit your 5th wheel. It happened today. See how he feels tomorrow before any tough decisions.

I’ve seen one make a full recovery. It took several months and swimming for rehabilitation. The muscles in that leg will atrophy. The challenge is going to be keeping weight off it till the bones knit together. Hopefully that damned ankle biter tries that mess on the wrong dog and gets what it has coming.

Wow that’s terrible. Sorry to hear it. I have had same scary moments like that, dog off lash makes a b-line run to my dog and they tangle, luckily my dog never got injury, but I sure give that dog owner an earful! It pisses me off just thinking about it. I wish your dog a speedy recovery.

have a good bud that has miniatures, been around miniatures a lot and they are feisty but smart enough to realize my size 11 is bigger than they are.

if it can attack and break a leg, that is a problem.

Honestly that was my first thought as well when I saw the pic. I have seen quite a few 3 legged dogs over the years so I just assumed that amputation was the normal course of action for a broken rear leg.

Hope he makes a full recovery. Had I been in your shoes I am pretty sure the other dog would have gotten a boot to the ribs if it was lucky and a bullet if I happend to be armed at the time. I love dogs but have no use for aggressive unrestrained dogs in public.

The owner husband bought the materials and we built a ramp this afternoon. Toast is getting surgery tomorrow. The owner's are covering all costs.

That's really good of him but I still don't understand how little dog hurt big dog that bad. Would have kicked that dog as hard as I could.....or maybe that's what did it? Would make sense if little dog was clamped down and you drop kicked.

It happened very fast plus it was unexpected with a 15 lb vs 95 lb dog. The schnauzer was underneath Toast so I couldn't get a clean shot or kick the attacker without possibly hitting our dog. I was armed.

I considered shooting the dog immediately after the fact but decided there was too much risk downrange trying to hit a small moving target.

We would have already gone on a one-way ride into the national forest.

This is an example of eye witness testimony issues. I was right there and saw it happen. The only thing I can think of is the dog was clamped down on Toast's hind leg and they were tussling around when some unique angle and force occurred just at the right time in the tibia and fibula.

I'm also going to ask the vet tomorrow about possibly other issues like bone cancer as he is 7 years old.

Otherwise Toast is a very healthy and awesome dog.
