I use an AR at work and see no reason it wouldn't work for HD as well.

Mossberg 590 with a speedfeed stock and a side saddle.. ghost ring sights, and a surfire light in the forearm.. 18" bbl
between the tube, the speedfeed and the side saddle I can keep 18 rounds of ammo on the gun... the tube and speedfeed carry 00 buck.. the 6 round side saddle carries foster slugs..
All that said.. I built that shotgun almost 25 years ago when I was still a cop and patrol rifles really hadnt replaced shotguns in squad cars just yet... I was also on my departments tactical team at the time, so even then the shotgun was typically in the rear of my vehicle (unmarked SUV) with all of the rest of my kit, and I kept my M4/AR up front for quick access if I needed a long gun (really just kept the shotgun around because I had it and thought at some point it might be the more practical weapon for a specific scenario, etc.. it was better to have it and not need it.. than find myself needing it and not having it)..
My primary home defense firearm is an AR thats specifically set up for FISHing (Fighting In Someones House).. I find it to be a FAR superior firearm to my FISHing shotgun, which has largely stayed in the safe for the last 20+ years.. (lighter, more compact, more ammunition carried on the firearm, faster reload, more range, better penetration against hard targets, etc..etc..)..

They should issue a pistol grip SBS to ya’ll, with a wolftail to clip on your vest. Loaded with breeching rounds, let it dangle out of the way. Keep them M4 where you have it and the SBS in the console. Them breeching loads open doors way easier than a battering ram and they don’t send a bunch of pellets to ricochet off the floor. Better than beating a door down, that gives bad guys too much time to think.

I've messed with several, but have settled on the inexpensive Maverick 88 that Mossberg makes in Eagle Pass. Also have an OpSol insert en route so I can run Aguilla shorties (or at least so my small-framed significant other can). That Youtube hot dog James Reeves helped me make up my mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9OL7IquoIoI've got one off these loaded up with double ought. If they don't run when you rack it, they get what they have got coming. Home defense really depends upon where I am at the moment. .357 mag, 1911, AR, 9mm.

Will add a two-point sling, but that's about all. Using the Magpul spacers, I have the LOP set at 13 1/2 inches, which feels about right for this use. Might shoot a couple of rounds of skeet with it, just because.

![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/05/full-2102-419614-img_1549.jpeg) I had a back up rattle can 870 12ga just collecting dust. Chopped it, added the mag extension and optic. It’s ugly and I like it that way.

KISS-- 870, extended tube, ghost ring sights, side saddle for shells and recommend a light if you can-- 18" cylinder bore, does excellent with rifled slugs or buckshot.
Where I will chime in my $.02 is really on the ammo and that depends on where you live and what you are defending (apartment vs neighborhood house vs rural house)-- having put plenty of many types through a duty shotgun... no need for anything more than 2 3/4" shells-- quality rifled slugs are great for putting big things down quickly, 00 does a good job as well; on buckshot-- pay for quality if it is your defense ammo-- I've seen cheap crap barely stay on paper at 25y... Federal Flight Control 00 is as good as it gets for buckshot and has patterned well in anything I've shot it in-- (that wad does great in their turkey and waterfowl loads too).
Some of the guys mentioned shotgun drawbacks- recoil, overpenetration, wide pellet spread, hard to mount a light... The 870 (ok or the mossy 500) will always have a place for defense but good ARs, PCCs and handguns w/ lights/optics have really taken over and narrowed the niche that a pump gun fills now.

Guess it helps to attach the photo. I looked for an existing pic of mine but gave up posting when I couldn't find one. It's just a Maverick 88 but maybe I'll snap a photo anyway. I do have a gangster heat shield installed. I looked into swapping 500 wood furniture on it but that requires swapping rails and other parts.
Pass the gravy.

We have a pair of M4’s loaded with 00 buck. If you shoot someone with that at inside the home distances they are going to be shoveling them into a wheelbarrow to cart them out. If the fight goes outside I am switching to my AR in 300 HAM’r.

Particularly appreciate the input from our current and former LEOs. Thanks fellas. MDWest, how do you set up an AR for FISHing? Ive got a few rigged different ways... but my primary is pretty typical (albeit a little dated with the accessories I think) if what a lot of people run these days I think.. its definitely nothing special or unique.. Im running a 10" piston upper "pistol" with the Sig Brace on the back end (556 gun). White high lumen light (o-light PL2 Mini), and a sig romeo 5 red dot on top.. Ive also got a YHM Resonator-K can on the gun.. which helps keep the flash, blast and noise of the short barrel under control pretty well, while still keeping the weapon shorter overall and more compact (easier to move around with) than your typical 16" barreled "home defense" AR15.. Ive thought about turning it into an SBR (already have tax stamps for multiple suppressors, etc..so why not?).. but while the sig brace isnt optimal, its effective enough for my purposes... and at the moment pistol braces are still legal, etc.. so I havent bothered as of yet.. I run mag-pul mags exclusively out of it (affordable and reliable), and run Federal 62gr bonded ammo through it (similar load to the FBI's "tactical" load its regional SWAT teams use)..

built this 870 a long time ago, had the barrel threaded for the breaching choke. normal is all 00 buck, sometimes 00/slug/00/slug etc. makes a great pig gun in the woods. just the 2 rear shell holders are on it now. it is my carry while on the property most of the time, excellent snake getter.
