I have an air compressor with about a 6.5 gallon tank that has quit on me. Who works on these or would it make about as much sense to just purchase a new one? Having gotten used to having air around the shop is a convenience I started taking for granted until now. I need it fixed or replaced. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Google the make and model and see if there is a rebuild kit you can purchase. I rebuilt mine for about $50. Took less than an hour. The kit had a new sleeve, piston and a couple gaskets.

You don't say what's wrong. Does it not start? Not pump? trip breaker? Unloader broken? With shop labor $50-100/hour depending on age, might be better to replace with a new on and warranty. Take a look on-line in Grainger's and see what repair kits run for your model. Maybe you can fix it yourself.
I have several friends in house construction, and two that assemble Tuff Sheds for a living. Their compressors run 8 hours a day, six days a week. They have all gone to the new Makita MAC2400 Big Bore compressor. Less than $400, oil lubed, quiet, and will last thousands of hours

My little one at the ranch crapped out and I got this and it had everything I needed to fix it. Pressure Switch Kit
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

The other common thing is the check valve in the cylinder head. (Compressor seems to run fine, but does not build up pressure).
Its usually just four bolts to remove. It's maybe a 10 minute job, if the gasket remains intact. If not, then you are in for a 30 minute job to scrape it and slap in a new one. Be careful not to overtighten the bolts...its not like head bolts on car engine.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

something you can do if you want is buy the new one, convert the old tank to storage, run 2 tanks for more time between it running.

Do you have a picture or what model is it? Some air compressors are worthwhile and easy to rebuild others not so much. I have rebuilt a couple.
