My son is making quite a pile of hogs bones with his. Is that considered medium game?

Myself and a couple friends have taken quite a few hogs with the Grendel. Not my favorite but it works fine.

That’s what I mostly use for hogs.

Been using one for about 20 years, very effective in a light weight AR 15 platform

Liked the Grendel enough in the AR that I had a boltaction built in it before they were available. The biggest critter I have killed with it so far is a 200lb bore hog, high shoulder shot and down right there. Not sure how many deer and other hogs but enough that I have full confidence it it. The ranges on deer and hogs have been from 20 yards to a little over 400 yards and so far nothing has gone more than 50 yards but all were with good shot placement which to me is pretty easy with the Grendel.

Something to add. I built my 6.5 Grendel AR with a fairly heavy 20" barrel. Hunting from a blind means not carrying it a lot. As said above, it's a good pig killer. Yet it has been to the 1000 yard range many more times. On an average day (107 Sierra tipped) it's easily a 700 yard shooter on steel. On VERY low wind days it hits the 1000 yard steel (2 MOA) very well. It does require a scope change and ammo change but it has slayed hogs as close as 20 yards (most quite a bit further) yet is still full of fun past 500 yards. Reloading my own ammo is a major advantage as the 123gr stuff starts to yaw at 900 yards (Here in PA). It took some work to turn the 107gr from the worst shooting bullet to the absolute best.

The only downside I see for this Grendel is for the reloader. If it is loaded up until you see pressure signs (like in a 5.56) then you are dangerously over pressure. No need to ask how I know this.

All in all it is a very great cartridge.

It really shines with the nosler 129gn ABLR. That bullet expands down to 1300fps which is easily achievable for reasonable hunting distances even out of my 12.5".

Another question for clarification, my humbly apologies. Ok I hunt from blinds, I have more hardware in my neck and noggin than a hardware store. I only hunt around ballinger, angelo and points south.
I am recoil adverse not a recoil weenie, my neck being the issue. I do have 2 grendels a manual and auto.

Will the grendel be MORE than enough for squealers to muley's, whitetail, auodad, pronghorn ?

I thank ta'll kindly for any and all help.

To add really like the 6.5mm's the 270 stinks, in my book, as the 243

I think it will be enough for all of those if you aren’t shooting that far. I think it might be borderline at best for a big auodad.

I your opinion, do ya believe I need to add a 6.5 creedmoor to the stable?

I would just stick with the Grendel if you aren’t hunting over 200 yards. Recoil is materially less. Creedmoor would make sense if you plan on shooting at game over 300 yards.

You could still target shoot out to 500+ yards easily with a Grendel.

Thanks brother. I go by what jack O'Connor wrote. That even with his 7x57 mauser he never harvested anything over 200 yards.

I just gave a affinity for 6.5's, and 1911 45acp's full size

It will be enough if you are close enough. And if you make perfect shot placement.

But, Aoudad and Pronghorn are likely to be longer shots. 6.5 Grendel is not a cartridge I would use on either one.

I had to shoot my Pronghorn at 689 yards. I was using a 7mm-08 A.I. loaded with a 162 ELD-X.

A close friend shot his Aoudad at 500 yards, with the same ammunition type.

Everyone needs at least one .308 Win. You can cut down on recoil with how the rifle is set up. Add some weight, and attach a suppressor, or a muzzle brake.

I do appreciate the advice and help. I'm 50 going on 51 this September. I'm not like my brother and nephews, taking 400 yard shots. I'm putting meat in the freezer.

I get that.

But the meat might be at 400 yards. The Aoudad and Pronghorn. It's got to be killed effectively before it gets cut up and put into the coolers.

I have a couple 6.5 Grendel rifles AR and bolt from before anyone was chambering anything but ARs or TCs for them. I have yet to feel undergunned with them or really worry about them being enough for what I hunt. It would not be my choice for Aoudad but there have been some killed with the round as there have been elk, black bear, even a moose or to. Largest thing I have killed with mine is hog that was a little over 200lbs but only about 100 yards. Have killed 100lb or so pigs at over 400 yards with it.

My favorite bullet in it has become the 129gr Nosler long range accubond which I have no idea what they look like after the shot because all have exited. Grendel doesn't have enough velocity to over stress standard cup and core bullets that much so they work find and that largest hog was with an old 123gr a-max worked just fine on him with a high shoulder shot. Lots of people also like the 120gr Gold dot bullets.

If I were planning on shooting over 300 yards on game I would consider another round but in reality but the loads I use still have more than 1000ft-lbs energy at 400 yards.

There is something to be said about "Right-Sizing" the equipment for the task. The vast majority of game taken in Texas is within 100 yards.... probably more like 50 yards. Most of the popular cartridges from my childhood and their milder offspring are still overkill.

After taking into account your specific needs/limitations, pick the cartridge that will best fits the majority of your hunting. There is not a Scout Badge for quietly suffering while intentionally wearing the wrong size shoes. Don't lug around a ill-fitted firearm that is a burden instead of a pleasure to carry.

On the rare occasion that you are taking +400 yard shots on large game then you can either swap/borrow a rifle from a friend or go buy yourself an early birthday/Xmas present.

The only other step up would be a 6.5 creedmoor, though, the 2 grendel's, which I have 2 that I built. The only big bore I have is a 1911 mil-spec 45 acp.
