Looking to buy a feeder. I want to feed 25-75 corn protein. Want to only buy one feeder. I have about a 500ish budget, what are my best choices for this? I will be feeding all corn in the fall.

Protein doesn’t do as well on the ground so you should be looking at a free choice feeder, which will cost you a ton in feed $.
Timed trough feeder would possibly be best for you, but is double or more your budget.
I’d pony up and get a timed drop feeder, and your savings over the years will pay for it. If not I’d buy the biggest free choice feeder you can afford and plan on filling it often!

Agree with rickym. I'd make me a 55 gallon barrel corn slinger and buy me a protein feeder. Of course with the price of accessories you can dam near buy a 55g feeder now for the same cost as making one.

Or just buy a slinger of some kind and just do corn and forget the protein. Your not adding enough protein in your ratio above to make a real difference. Corn is the draw to deer. They eat plenty of protein if you make it available but candy corn is what gets them in the area.

If you are just set on putting out protein thru a spin feeder, get a corn/soybean mixture and put in the feeder.

Agree with you Russ...soybeans have 18% protein.

On a 50/50 mix of soy bean/corn let's look at the numbers. If you throw 5lbs per throw then 2.5lbs of it is soy bean. Twice a day that's 5lbs. Easy math. But 5lbs of protein a day, even if the deer get 100% of it, isn't going to make a visible impact unless your herd is like 2-4 deer. Factor in loss to birds, squirrels, coons, spoilage etc, and it's just not going to make a difference. Spring thru late summer we have about 15-20 deer per day hitting our free choice protein eating between 40-70lbs per day, every day. That's 3.5-4.6lbs per deer, per day at the peak.

Not trying to argue about it. Just pointing out the reality.

If you want truly tangible results, free choice is really the only way to go. Timed feeders can work to pattern the deer and cut down on some loss, but to get the best results even then you need to give them what they want/need when they want/need it. Otherwise a few will get the biggest benefit and the late comers get little to nothing.
