They should take a tour of Odessa! Take their minds of off that hogwash. Been here 61 years through booms and bust, seen progress and decline of the town. Born close to Odessa as possible and raised here so I know what it was and is presently. The saying is cream rises to the top...we ain't cream, we have the cesspool thing going on here. I thumb through Texas Highways mag at doctors offices and they are in business of promoting positives and tourism so there will never be honest articles about this area in one. Yes you can make a living in this area! Cost of living bites a big one, scenery sux on a good day, entertainment not great, thankfully we have interstate 20 and 385 to escape 0n (150 miles any direction and things look better). Can find decent food so you won't starve. Roads around town and upgrades taking place make the idea of driving a staduim truck cross your mind. Traffic matches our scenery! Small town mentality combined with massive migrant traffic (welcome to a boom town hiring practices). Migrants are all cultures chasing a dollar so not race specific. Crime, we got it but it goes with economy and proximity of the place. Every parts of Texas has it's high and lows and the way folks write about it can be broad, so I wouldn't trust a influencers opinion to save my life...or realtor.
