Remington 788 in .222 Remington: I once swore I would never let this rifle go, but the honest truth is I just don't shoot it anymore...too many weapons choices and much more focus on hog hunting has relegated this gem to the status of safe queen, and that's just wrong.
This rifle wears a Boyd's custom walnut stock. There are some blemishes on the wood, but nothing really hideous. It looks like the bolt was occasionally contacting the stock at the front of the comb. The odd thing is that I was never aware of it, as though it all happened in one single day (and it still pisses me off to think about it); see the photo. Another photo appears as though there is a gouge next to the barrel channel, but that is a trick of the light...it's actually an impression in the wood. I think it arrived like this when I ordered it from Boyd's but I did not notice it then. I don't know how this could possibly have happened in use. It's just "one of those things," I guess.
Overall the blemishes are pretty insignificant and it's a very handsome rifle. The rifle will come furnished with a Timney trigger, Weaver mounts, and Warne steel 1" rings. Comes with one magazine.
This rifle has given me many, many 5-shot groups in the 1/2" neighborhood and under, and on occasions when I was very deliberate and shot four 5-shot groups, the average was well under 0.5 inch. I used Hornady 50-gr. V-Max and Nosler 50-gr. Ballistic Tips. Powders that worked best for me were H4198, H322, X-Terminator, and LT-32 especially.
