Scrolling around on Google Maps and noticed this fairly large area oddly devoid of communities compared to surrounding areas for no particular reason. I see there are plenty of farms and such, I'm sure there are some THFers living and hunting there. Basically the area south of 90, east of 77, west of 71 and north of 59, with the metropolis of Speaks at the center.

Navidad river, and a few creeks I believe, definitely flood plain. I drive across lake Texana many times a year headed south. I see blinds in a few pastures goin down 59 just south of your inquirer area, can’t speak for anything going north.

I have a friend from El Campo whose ancestors were the original settlers of Danevang, he has some family connections to Speaks and was going to dig a little deeper. He pointed me to Provident City which was hoped to be a big town but the railroad never came. He said it's likely that explains the lack of towns for the whole area, no towns because no railroad, no railroad because no towns. There are a decent amount of homes and ranches though which is what's interesting to me. On the other side of 77 there are plenty of small towns scattered around. Hopefully it stays undeveloped like that for a long time, sad seeing the urban sprawl eat up the real Texas.

I remember hearing something similar, in relation to the railroad.

We have property north of Edna. The Lavaca and Navidad river run through your highlighted area. Lots of creek bottom and drainage. The higher ground is mostly farmland and woods. Some farmhouses scattered throughout but not much else. If your in the area, a stop by The Morales Store on 111 is a must for lunch/dinner. Great burgers and fired okra.

Thanks for the tip, that's just the sort of place I like.

It has a lot of low land prone to flooding. Most of the land in that area has been in families for generations. When they are put up for sale, they never make it on the market because someone in the family typically buys it beforehand. The land that’s on the market is generally expensive. I’m quite familiar with that are and know most of the people. One guy that built a house just north of Speaks had to build up an area 8’ to stay out of the flood plain. In 20+ years on a lease, one deer was killed right at 150”. Most years if you see a legal buck, it’s in the 100”-120” range. Many years you’ll never see one.
