They are probably more fringe than ever with the popularity of long range.

I’ve hunted with the 338 Federal but not the others. They never really get attention on this site so decided to start a thread and see if anyone still cares about them.

I was thinking over 30 caliber.

I’d call those large bore and anything over .400 big bore but that’s just me.

If i can ever get my hands on it i am getting one bored to 358 winchester and cut to 16”.

I am still pretty keen on a .338 Federal, maybe 18”.

I also want a .257 weatherby on the opposite end, but if i were going with that or .25-06 or 7 mag then i want a 26” barrel.

Hot hand loads all around, please, since i am talking about guns i dream about then let’s get the loads i dream of using.

Overall, i prefer a handy gun with a shorter barrel. I don’t even want to know what happens when you cut a .25-06 to 16”, apparently there is not a whole lot of difference between .338 federal or .338 win mag when you cut them to 16”. This is what lead me to 358 win.

I can see that. I generally heard medium classified as over .30 to .375

Always thought they were kinda neat, but anytime I compared a non mag medium bore to an 06, I never saw much benefit to the medium bores,so I never bought one.

If I ever did it would probably be a whelen though or maybe an 8 Mauser

Just sold my .338 Edge because I don't have a 1000 yard range. It was fun to shoot and hitting something at 1000 yards is pretty cool.

For a bolt action the 350 Rem Mag is king in my opinion.
For a lever gun its not even close. Give me a 356 Winchester and things will die before they ever hit the ground.

Compare Hornady Superformance 35 Whelen to 30-06 since that is about the hottest factory loads for each. Stepping up to 358 bore is a very substantial power boost. Think .338 win mag muzzle energy.

Factory ammo for 358 winchester kind of sucks if you can even find it, but available load data looks really good, even Nosler data looks good. And it can handle 250 grain bullets.

What you gain in power you lose in BC, you gotta keep it inside 200 or maybe 300 to take advantage of the efficiency, according to the numbers.

You also lose a lot less in a carbine.

Also, there is something about the .338 bore diameter. The .338 bullets somehow have a better ballistic coefficient yet the bore diameter makes more power, more efficiently. I just kinda have my heart set on pushing 250’s, the .358 win handles them better than the .338 fed in a 16” barrel. It’s the limitation of the .308 parent cartridge case.

I had a .35 Whelen for years and sold it off jut a few weeks ago. I'd bought it for bear hunting in Arkansas when I'd go with a group of guys from work. I think I went three times, maybe four. Never even saw a pile of bear scat.

Since I had it on hand, I really wanted to kill a big hog with it but I never saw a big hog while I was carrying it with the single exception of the time I was too fast and shot waaaay too soon. I shot the first hog I saw coming in under the fence on that occasion because I'd been too patient the day before and missed my opportunity that day, and I'd resolved to not think twice from now on and repeated to myself over and over: "Hog, shoot. Hog, shoot. Hog, shoot." Just as I pulled the trigger I saw a much larger hog coming in right behind the one I shot, which turned out to be something like a 15-pounder and I saw no more for the rest of the afternoon and evening. It just goes like that sometimes, I guess.

I'm hanging onto a Winchester 94 Big Bore in .375 Winchester. There's just something about that rifle...it's just a sexy little beast. I'll take it down south with me next time I go and spend a day up on the ridge. I've never seen a hog up there but my nephew tells me he's had a number of encounters up on the ridge, and met some pretty aggressive pigs up there.

If I thought I needed a medium bore rifle I'd go with a 9.3x62 if I could find one I liked, and the trusty old .375 H&H would probably be the alternate pick.

I have not played around much with my 350 REM Mag but the 200 TTSX can be pushed pretty fast. I picked up some 250 Hot Cors a few months ago. I’ll probably stat working on a load for it and the 9.3 for nilgai.

I have a CZ Model 550 American in 9.3x62 that I really enjoy.

i use a 375H&H as my truck/tractor gun and have a 8mm Remington Magnum for a elk rifle, if those count

how about 8mm 06 imp.? Only seen 2 of them but was amazing shooter in the one I have access to, the other was someone else's

Mine is a 338-06 ai, love that rifle. Nilgai and elk out to 200 yds. , not a problem.

I used to have a 375 Winchester, I had forgotten about that. It was a cool gun but recoil was stiff as it was pretty light and I was only going to shoot deer with it anyway so I sold it and went back to a 30-30. Probably sold it too quick though is there worth about double before I sold it for now

338MX. Used to have a BLR in 358 Win. Wouldn't mind a 8.6BO.

I reload so I'm not extra worried about what factory loads do. Neither one of those rounds are going to be super flat shooting and whatever you gain and energy with 35 Whelan you probably make up in sectional density in the 06 so it's probably a wash. And since I've killed more than one elk with 150 grain bullet out of a 30-06 (that's what I had with me, but I probably would have chosen a different bullet if I had the opportunity) the Whelan just doesn't make as much sense to me as I would like it to

35 Rem and 350 Legend, only thing I have over 30 anymore.

I have an 8x56R as my biggest bore rifle which is a .329 caliber not the .323 of the 8x57, 8mm Rem Mag etc. I've only shot it at targets, but I do have an S&K rear sight scope mount for it I could rig up some day.

The only rifle I have bigger than .30 cal is a Marlin lever in .357, but it's a pistol cartridge so...

I think bore size meaning can be added to the debate list like high vs low fence, truck brand, etc.....
