'Went to high school with ours. He's okay; I wouldn't say great. 'Was an avid tennis player, but now hobbles around all over the office with knee problems. Poor guy brought in his niece when she graduated from dental school, he renamed the practice "Legacy Dental," then she decided she wanted to go somewhere else.

The best one I've been around was 35+ years ago. He'd been in the Air Force and was really into prevention, taking care of your teeth, etc. 'Didn't scold, but had a real teaching attitude.

I have no patience for ladies in any front office of any business, with no expertise in the services or product, that try to "plus sell." The worst is when the guy puts his wife up there. You can see it a mile away. They many times run off more business than they gain.

I have been going to the same dentist twice a year for the last 18 years and had zero issues with them trying to up-sale me anything. Only twice have I had to pay anything out of pocket in that time and it was because my crown and a filling were only partially covered by my insurance. I pay roughly $42 a month for family dental insurance and we have never had to pay for anything when getting their check-ups/cleaning twice a year.

Never had to spend money on my teeth but my wifes cost me nearly 20k.

Couldn't be happier with my dentist and I have known the man for going on 22 years. He is major expensive but not for me. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of his full prices.

I have never had an issue. BCBS dental insurance takes $4.81 per month out of my check. Every six months I pay $15.00 for cleaning, x rays, and all the works. The wife had two wisdom teeth cut out last year at the oral surgeon, it cost $300.00 or so. I also have never had the dentist try to up sell anything. We go to a small town dentist, and they stay booked up like five months out.

I quit going to dentist because they want to put a crown on 2 different teeth and some other BS. Total about $3000.00. I said no thanks, I have had these crooked ugly suckers long enough and If they got to hurting me, I'd just go to Affordable Dentures and have em all yanked out and get me some real pretty store bought ones for a couple more thousand or so than that.
There's a point when enough is enough..

The high cost has been driven by corporate-owned dental offices that pay incentives to dentists and their staff to meet sales goals. They're very much like service centers in car dealerships who are constantly looking for opportunities to sell services that aren't a must. Veneers are a good example. One local dental office even showed my wife, who has had just one cavity her entire life, an unsolicited, computer-generated image of what her smile would look like after getting them.

Finding a good and honest dentist has become as valuable as finding an honest and dependable auto repair shop for the same financial reasons.

I've got Capital Dental for my wife and I. Two cleanings a year is $0.00 but normally cost $72.00. My hygienist and I went to high school together so we've known each other close to 50 years. During that visit the dentist found two of my molars that had been filled while I was in the military to be cracked. He explained that over time these fillings would expand and crack teeth. He took photos of the teeth and showed me. I was convinced. The way my insurance is set up, I'm allowed one crown a calendar year. Had one done in November and my last one three weeks ago. Out of pocket for each one was $530.00. Insurance covered the rest, approximately $1300.00.
