Finally got a chance to load some for the 375 win. A box of 240 grain trophy bonded bear claws came with it. They were pointed bullets and too long. Ended up trimming the cases a little shorter like they do with the lever revolution bullets in some calibers. Going to have to single feed them, they will chamber and eject loaded ammo but will not feed from the magazine. Loaded them over 25.5 grains of A-5744 for an average muzzle velocity of 1725 fps. Was flying with some extrapolated data so did t push it too hard. They expanded well and shot a ragged hole at 50 yards with the irons. Use to think I could shoot further but man age has not been kind to my eyes already.

It's a neat round in a lever gun I think. I swapped into a 94 Big Bore .375 with someone here years ago and I love that little rifle.

I would imagine you've run into the same problem I have---bullet choices and availability. The major manufacturers seem to have dropped the bullets that are appropriate for a lever gun in .375 caliber or they're simply not available.

There IS one source: Vollmer bullets. I've never bought from Vollmer, but I might someday if my experiment does not work out.

What I did was get hold of some Speer 235-grain bullets meant for use in .375 H&H and such. I snipped the exposed point with side cutters and sanded or filed the noses flat, then I loaded up some trial loads using Re7. I made up a dummy cartridge, complete with bullet and live primer but no powder, and fed it into the magazine first and then two live rounds after it. Then I fired trial rounds, keeping one live round in the magazine behind the dummy cartridge at all times to see if there was any evidence of danger of the primer in the dummy cartridge getting set off during recoil. After a dozen rounds or so I cycled that dummy round out and inspected the primer, and there was not any hint of evidence that it was being impacted in such a way that it might be set off. I also looked at some .30-cal bullets intended for use in .30-30 lever guns and measured the flat surface which would contact the primer in the round in front of it in the tube magazine, and the flattened Speer bullet's nose measured almost exactly the same. I'm pretty sure it's safe enough to use in the tubular magazine.

Incidentally, my bullets are seated so that there may be just a bit of ogive in the case neck, but I don't see it being an issue at all. If that turns out to be incorrect then I'll trim some length off the brass. I just don't see the necessity of it using these Speers.

I pretty much maxed out the charge of Re7, which seems to be a very good powder in the .375W. Accuracy was decent considering my vision (sucks to be old sometimes, eh?), certainly good enough for 100-yard shots on large animals. I doubt I'll ever shoot mine at anything that far, though...I intend to use it walking the mesquite woods on the "mountain" that runs down the middle of my nephew's property, and also walking the creek bottom when it's dry. The one thing I am not at all certain of is how the bullet is going to perform at around 2000 fps impact velocity. I think it will work, but I'm just going to have to try it. I sure as hell HOPE it works, or I'm liable to be quite a sight---some old fart trying to outrun a pissed off hog.

If I have to run from a pissed off hog, I guess I'll see about buying some Vollmer bullets.

Yes very little in the way of any kind of support for the old 375. Furry is another bullet maker that sells jacketed bullets for it. That’s going to be my next look. I wanted to tag a deer with this rifle this year but after sitting with my son and wife begins the trigger all season I decided to tote one of the old reliables. It also came with two boxes of HSM ammo loaded with the 200 grain Sierra prohunter. I have a few places set to notify me when brass comes in stock and such but it’s been a hoot to shoot already.

The bullets I’m shooting expanded well and I would think they are sturdier than the speers, I think you will have good luck.

Good to know you think the Speers will work. I hate hunting in tennis shoes.

Did you know Starline offers .375W brass? If I needed more that's what I'd buy. I think it's even in stock and ready to ship lately.

I never heard of Furry bullets. I'll take a look at them, just in case.

I haven’t seen the starline in stock, but that’s what I was going to buy. If it’s in stock somewhere you know I’d appreciate it if you let me know I’d like to order some.

You're in luck. Click HERE.

I know it says "backordered," but I have ordered brass from Starline that was on backorder status many times and never waited more than about a week for it, two weeks tops.

I might go ahead and order some more .260 brass. I have a bunch on hand but I'm not going to wait until I really need it. That approach has worked out poorly for me before.

Like I said, Matt, I have bought many cases from Starline that were "on backorder" at the time, and received them all very quickly.

I was looking at my account a while ago and I never noticed, but they keep a grand total of all your orders. My history of on-line purchases directly from Starline goes back to 2017 and my total is over $2100. I better make sure the wife doesn't ever see that!

Good. You won't be disappointed...Starline won't let you pay for anything they can't ship in a timely manner.

Then there's the opposite end of the spectrum, and Optics Planet comes to mind...they'll take your money and are happy to make you wait for months, and you won't even have a clue that they don't have an item in stock at the time you order.

There is another way to look at 375 bullets. Custom bullet casters make bullets perfectly suited for the 375's velocities. Here is an example. It is a great company but I've never bought 375 bullets from them. https://www.montanabulletworks.com/product-category/rifle/?filter_caliber=375. Other companies do cast 375 bullets but my history with Montana Bullets.

It is more work to get the proper fit, hardness and alloy but you can end up with quite a superior hunting bullet.

I have shot gas checked cast in the past in 45-70, but would prefer to stick with a jacketed bullet as cast seems to not expand much.

I like Hawk Bullets for the 375 and 38-55 Winchester, much like the Barnes original with soft jacket and core but shoot well in my rifle and the one deer I shot with them didn't argue. They expand well and retain almost all their weight.

Generally if they do not have in stock still ship within a month or so. https://hawkbullets.com/bullet-selection.html

Which weight have you used, Kevin? I think I might like the 220-grain because it seems like a good compromise between velocity and weight & sectional density for penetration.

Honestly, though...I don't imagine I'll need more bullets for my .375 than what I have on hand.

I have a 94 in .375 Winchester that appears to be unfired. I bought it years ago out of a pawn shop in DFW and ever since have been collecting ammo for it. I probably have 8 boxes now of various ammo.

I still haven't fired it though that is on the list this year. I have owned three 94s in my life and to be honest didn't like the other two(both 30-30s.). One of which I need to list on here. But my 336 in 30-30 is one of my favorite rifles.

I hope I like the .375 better.

Yesterday I saw "130 grain speers" and was thinking HUH? Then this morning I realized you were thinking about the tipped bullets for .30-30 on the other thread.

I just couldn’t find a way to make the Barnes work. Maybe if I cut the case way short. Just fought you every step, the tips deform in the mag, they are too long to feed, you can single feed them but then they are took g to eject an unfired cartridge. Going with a 130 grain speer flat point which still has t arrived

I have a 375 Winchester I bought new when they first came out. It was my main hunting rifle for many years. The last couple years I was hunting with it, I had night vision on it for a dedicated 50 yard rifle to use in my camper stand for hog hunting, but I did do some field walking with it at night. In the early years I preferred the 250grn factory load for deer as I was mostly hunting deep brush back then. Hogs were really not as much of a thing back then as they are today. Then of course it was discontinued and my only factory choice was the 200grn. It always killed deer no problem. For the night vision setup I was using the 255 JFN buffalo bore load which was supposed to be similar to the old 250 factory load. https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=543
Though I don't remember ever losing a hog, the problem I saw was I think I was getting some unexpanded pass throughs at closer ranges. Problem may not be the right way to put it. I have had some instances where I lined up two hogs front to back and killed both. I did retire it from night duty and now use a 300 blk for my night vision rifle, so I need to choose a new scope for the 375 before I bring it back to life as a deer hunting rifle again. I have 100s of rounds of brass saved over the years so this is a great thread as I will reload for it when I do. Despite being set up for reloading it, I have been saying that for a few years now I will admit. blush

Here is the rifle. The hog in the photo immediately after taking the picture, got up, grabbed my rifle, threw it in the air, had me ducking into a smaller target because I could not remember if I had racked another round in the chamber, and chased me a short ways. It was not a bad shot and should not have been able to do that.
