A very good friend of mine said it wouldn't keep shots inside 5 MOA at 100 yards. He told me there was lots of slack between the recoil lug and the recess in the stock. I said pillars, bed, free float, then let's see what it does. He brought it to me with a hope and a prayer.

A Bushnell 3-9X Duplex reticle. I zeroed it high at 100 yards, then went out to 200 yard paper. Since he's an old soul, I thought he'd appreciate Winchester brass and Winchester primers. Though those primers don't tend to make for low ES. H-Varget and 168 gr A-Max.

The 4 o'clock wind at 10 mph wasn't helping. But it's better than 5 MOA. wink

Nothing like a 788 for a good shooter that didn't cost an arm and leg. Some shot lights out right out of the box while others needed a bit of tweaking such as bedding and free floating. Looks like that one was made between 1968 and 1979 so well over 40 years old.

I need to figure out the date on this rifle. I'm curious.

He and I both agree, every American needs at least one .308 Win. I think this is his only one. I'm glad I got it in better shape for him!

B looks like under 1 moa. That's about as good as I have been able to get my .308 788 to shoot. Not bad for a rifle that cost me $250! I might give it to Chay when he turns 18...I might make him wait til I pass away! Lol.

Very Nice. My brother had a 243 that was a great shooter. He sold it. I could've strangled him.

This might help a little or get in ball park anyway. https://www.remarms.com/firearm-history/model-788

At one time Remington had more detail than that link has but could not find it today. For instance the 30-30 and 44 Mag per the older Remington data were made only 2 years and broke down the years better.

What pillars are you using?

In the market for some right now.

Make your own pillars. Aluminum tubing is easy to work with and costs little.

Yup. Made my own pillars in the lathe, from round bar stock aluminum.

If the barrel is original, you can tell the month and year of manufacture by the two letters on the left side of the barrel just forward of the receiver.
