There are about a half dozen Auodad behind the house and I wonder if they would be worth killing for eating. A few of them have pretty nice horns on them also

I have eaten them back in 1988 ish, have not eaten any since. There is a reason. I was young and maybe didn’t prepare it right, but not a fan.

They're sheep. I don't like sheep. Lamb, yes; sheep, no.

The Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia), also known as aoudad (pronounced [ˈɑʊdæd]) is a species of caprine native to rocky mountains in North Africa. While this is the only species in genus Ammotragus, six subspecies have been described. Although it is rare in its native North Africa, it has been introduced to North America, southern Europe, and elsewhere. It is also known in the Berber language as waddan or arwi, and in former French territories as the moufflon.

Wikipedia? Really?

https://www.britannica.com/animal/aoudad

aoudad, (Ammotragus lervia), North African goatlike mammal of the family Bovidae (order Artiodactyla). This species has been inappropriately called a sheep, although recent genetic information reveals that it is much more closely related to wild goats.

Sheep/goat or whatever they are, if they were yummy, they wouldn’t be such an issue.

They are good for jerky, and buzzard fodder

Had 2 quartered on ice cleanly killed gutted and skinned. We cooked some and dumped the ice chests for the scavengers. I have and would rather eat javelina.

This thread is weird. OP is someone from LA asking if a critter can be eaten. In this case, the answer is yes, but only applies to suckling youngsters.

On TV shows and on here, you always see the head and horns being packed out, but never the rest of an auodad. Surprisingly, I do not wonder why.

Aoudad are the closest thing in existence to being a mix between a goat and a sheep.

Aoudad is a term meaning "sand goat" in Arabic from what I understand.

Really cool animals.

But, they taste like shyte

I've guided for a hundred of them and the meat is for Coyotes and buzzards, I've tried it numerous ways and it all sucks.

Same here, and culled another hundred or so myself......it definitely does suck.

Great trophies, bad table fare but coyotes need to eat too, and Buzzards must not be able to smell anything.

I would love to hunt one for my wall but my days of hiking Sierra Blanca/Van Horn are long gone.

Heard all the stories about them being bad table fare so pulled the back strap off this one to find out for myself. Was able to eat it, but not something I'd bother to do again. Hate to waste edible meat, but the only thing I think it might be good for is sausage? And you'd have to add a lot of pork or beef fat. I can't see myself ever harvesting another one.
