I found this book on Palo Pinto County History that had my GGGrandfather and is brother in it with a brief description about their time there as well as some of the other Cowden clan.

This book is almost 2” thick and 700 pages in length and is packed with names and pictures of Palo Pinto pioneers and other notable/important people. If you have an ancestor from this county I would be happy to see if they are mentioned.

Here is the book cover page.

Books like that are so interesting, especially if you have family ties to that area.

My wife’s family has a long history’s in the county. Believe they have the same book at the farm house.

Wilson is one of the family names that is popular in the county.

Love those local histories. Some of my people who left Kimble County, Texas, for La Luz, New Mexico, in the early 1880s show up in a similar book on pioneers of Otero County.
Tbar, I don't know if you have any relatives in southern Oregon, but there is a cold case there that still haunts me, as I knew some of their relatives.

Sad but interesting story. They are probably very distant relatives but I do not know them.

Cool book that touches on some Palo pinto history is Good bye to a river. IMHO it should be on any Texans bookshelf. One of the best.

Very interesting, I actually have business in Newton County GA. It’s a really nice area east of Atlanta. Covington, GA is where they filmed the Dukes of Hazard TV series and their downtown is where the General Lee was doing doughnuts and running from Roscoe. And of course where Cooter’s garage was. I enjoy my business trips there.

TBar, I have a couple of old black and white pics of my grandparents and other family members migrating to the Indian Nation (Oklahoma) from Kentucky in about 1890 to 1900. Wagons pulled by a team of mules. They left so my Great Grandfather wouldn’t have to kill anybody else in feuds. They later moved to North Texas around the Muleshoe/Farwell area. They were mostly illiterate so not a lot of written history. I was mostly raised by them. I found a tractor seat to be more comfortable than a saddle.

Things were different then. I recall a neighbor, about 20 years old, being sent to prison on a paternity suit. Local girl named him as the father of her unborn child. The judge told him to marry her. He refused and denied ever having sex with her. He did 2 years in Huntsville. Several years later her brother was found to be the father.

Yep, things were different.

Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP

Very interesting Dave. Frame those pictures and write down that history so your kids and g-kids will have it. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, WH and George moved their families west in three stages. They established the JAL Ranch that was on the boarder of Texas and New Mexico(Part of Ector and Andrews county).
