My guess would be either a fence wire or low hanging tree limb opened him up. Next would be that he got horn hooked in quite the scrap. Either way, he's alive and eating, always a good sogn.

I’d say he’d known as the bad [censored] of his area.

Could have been a combine. Farmers will tell you it happens more than one might imagine. That injury looks like it has healed somewhat, so that could put it around harvest time, crop depending. There was a buck a couple years ago that got hit by one and there was video of it walking missing most of his back strap like it was no big deal... check it, looks similar, albeit less severe than the OP buck. https://www.bowhunting.com/article/what-happened-to-this-buck-crazy-trail-cam-video/

Could be any crop really. Today's cotton pickers could do the same, I believe.

I've seen similar things from combines too -- Only other thing that I could think of doing that is something like razor wire. Don't think barbed wire would do that sorta long damage. Normally it's more like a cut/tear and not a long strip like that.
As long as he's looking healthy and eating it'll probably heal up, though if it does get infected or if you see him again and he's acting odd probably good to put him down before it does get infected and he dies from it.

Ahem, he got put down and then was ripped up. That is most likely an injury from the deer the OP should be looking for.

Seen one like this it was because of ticks. The buck was rubbing them off by tree limbs or something. The ticks were in the hairline, the open area just didn’t have the hair on it.
