Son in law got the bug a few weeks ago on an AR duck hunt. He used an inlaws 12 O/U and is convinced that is what he wants to duck hunt with. Money is a bit tight for them but not too tight. I have tried to tell him to get a LH 870 express or that 870 field master until he has more money and convinced he's gonna keep doing it. My philosophy is buy once cry once, but I know he aint got 2K for an SBE or the like. I have never been in a duck blind w an O/U but I dont think I would care for in there, hence why I am steering him at an 870 to see if its just a fad for him or not. Yes he is LH. Any other wise advice? I dont duck hunt very much at all but have all the shotguns I need or want for any wing shooting. And no, he wont be taking mine into a duck blind, LOL. TIA

The CZ Drake comes in left hand. Mine has been great, CZ may still have a rebate running on them too. I have the cerakoted one.

Your son in law may consider two other pump shotguns in place of the Remington option. Browning BPS and the Ithaca Model 37 are both bottom ejection shotguns. As a left handed shooter myself I prefer the Ithaca Model 37 over both the Browning and Remington choices.

I killed a pile of Arkansas ducks with a right handed 870 and Winchester SX2 before I bought my first left hand shotgun. If money is tight, I’d go with a right hand for the time being. If he decides duck hunting isn’t for him, would be much easier to sell. If he catches the bug (like I did), he can save up and buy whatever he wants while not missing out on any hunting. A lot of the off the shelf shotguns have a neutral cast anyway (should check with manufacturer just to ensure). Between quail, dove, pheasant, duck, and goose hunting, I probably put 10-15K rounds downrange out of a right handed shotgun with no problems.

go spend $700 and get a semi-auto beretta A300 Outlander. Its a neutral cast ( I'm left handed and shot one for many years with no issues).


You don't want to duck hunt with an 870, there are much better guns for the job.

I have tried to explain that to him but he thinks less chance of failure not using a semi, SMH. I'm just trying to lead him without telling him he is wrong, LOL

There's a LH Benelli M2 in the classifieds now at a good price. If it was right-handed I'd take it.

Or let him get beat to death shooting a 6 lb pump 870 with 3" duck loads and he can see for himself.

I'm a lefty and have hunted with a Browning Citori, 20 ga, for over 3o years.
Only having two shots makes you take less iffy shots.

Browning BPS are great for lefty shooters. Bottom ejection, bottom feed and top tang safety makes them ambidextrous.
Just bought one for my grandson who shoots left handed as a Christmas present.
We just came back from an Arkansas duck hunt where he was using my wife’s Ithaca model 37.
She’s lefty also. It easy to install a left handed safety in the Ithaca. You’re limited to 2 3/4” in the older models and they are fixed chokes. A modified choke barrel patterned well with #2 steel shot.
The BPS invector plus choke tubes give you more options.

I learned how to hunt ducks, pheasants, quail, doves etc... with a Stevens single shot 20 ga. With practice you can break it and get another shell in it in less than a couple of seconds and using a single shot makes you take your time with that first shot. Most hunters would be better hunters if they learned how to have the patience to make that first shot count. You have to shoot birds one at a time and if you can make the first shot good limits come easy. Just sayin...

BPS is the way for the $

I'm a big fan of the Ithaca Model 37, solves a lot of problems. Still one of the smoothest operating pumps out there.

Agree with BPS, I shoot left or right handed and have quite a few.

Another lefty here with a BPS for a pump! That said-- for ducks I've always run a RH gas operated semi auto. Never had an issue
