I understand the quartering away shot is the best but I have been seeing broadside shots on tv and youtube. My question is in this general area (heart & lungs) Why do some deer drop instantly and others that are seemingly shot in the same area run off 50yds? What shot makes them drop wher they stand??? Also, do they run in the direction they are facing most of the time?

Only deer I have ever seen drop where they stand, has been a spine shot.
A lot of my deer run back from where they came.

spine shots drop'em. But they are always an accident. also, they occur when deer "jump the string". does anyone else think the quartering away is best??? i've always waited for a broadside. quatering always made a mess outta the deer and lots of meat for me

I like a slight quartering away and then wait for the leg that's facing me to be forward. X2 on them running where they came from quite frequently.

Broad side or a slight quarter. I'll take either. I've had a few just jump and run 10 yards then stop and look back. The jelly legs started and it was all over for them. Dropped right there. Kinda cool watching how quickly a sharp broad head properly placed works.

so, you guys think they can actually feel pain when they are shot well??? i just ask cuz sometimes they run off and look around like, "what the hell just happened" . then they just start falling. i'm sure a bad placed shot hurts if they dont die quikly, but i just hope well placed shots limit pain. guess we owe it to our qurry to practice and shoot well

A friend of mine highly recommended the RAGE broadhead. He's shot a couple of deer and a hog and none ran more than 10 yds. The cutting diameter is big so they bled out super quick.
